William Richard Hughes


A funeral service celebrating the life of William Richard Hughes, will be held on Thursday, December 27, 2018, at 7:00 p.m. with visitation from 5:00 p.m. until time of the funeral service, at the Kirkersville home of Hoskinson Funeral and Cremation Service, 285 East Main Street in Kirkersville. Graveside military honors by the Licking County Veterans Alliance will follow on Friday, December 28, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. in the Kirkersville Cemetery.
Bill died December 20, 2018, of Renal Cell Carcinoma, diagnosed in 2014, which spread to his brain in 2017. He was born December 19, 1947, to the late Charles R. and Katie (White-Aker) Hughes of Outville. Bill served honorably in the U.S. Army from 1966-1969 while stationed in Hanau, Germany. Upon discharge, he worked for a short time for Western Electric before attending OSU Newark and obtaining his teaching degree in 1977. He began his teaching career with Newark City Schools in 1978 and after 28 years retired in 2005.
He was a proud member of the Deathwind Muzzle Loading Club. He had a strong interest in Ohio and American History, a deep sense of pride in his country and in his family’s history and their service to this country.
Preceded in death by his parents; sister, Peggy Phillips; brother, John Acker; nephew, Dennis Phillips; and countless relatives he discovered while pursuing his passion of researching and documenting his ancestry.
He is survived by his niece and caregiver, Sherry (Mike) Lewis; nephew, Dan (Angie) Phillips; three great-nieces; three great-nephews; three great-great nieces; a host of dear friends; former students and co-workers at Miller Elementary; and his two beloved cats, Patches and Abby.
