A Mass of Christian Burial for Wayne P. Wollenberg, age 94, of Columbus, formerly of Thornville, will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church, 5684 Groveport Road, Groveport, on Saturday, May 10, 2014, at 10:30 a.m., with Father Richard Metzger, as celebrant. Entombment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Lockbourne.
Mr. Wollenberg passed away on Sunday, May 4, 2014, at the Selma Markowitz Care Center (operated by Hospice of Central Ohio). He was born May 1, 1920, in New Lexington to the late Daniel and Imelda (Bringardner) Wollenberg.
Mr. Wollenberg served in the U.S. Air Force during WWII in the 10th Air Service Group. He was a plumber with the Plumber Union helping build the Franklin County Jail and Budweiser plant to name a few of the projects he worked on. He loved gardening and working in the yard. A claim of his was he visited all 50 states with his late wife of 57 years, Clara May, whom passed away September 3, 2003. He was a parishioner of St. Mary’s in Groveport.
He is survived by his four children, David (Barbara) Wollenberg of Il, Wayne Wollenberg of Baltimore, Denis (Melody) Wollenberg of Newark and Joyce Smeigh of Thornville; 23 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bob and Dick; two sisters, Janet Livingston and Mary Jane Fallon; a sister-in-law, Joyce Wollenberg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, and wife, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Kenneth, Gene, Bill and Jerry; and three sisters, Margaret Wurdock, Ruth Weis and Leona Spanner.
