BUCKEYE LAKE – Water’s Edge Ministries will soon be ready for a rainy day.
Soon a new indoor 30 x 40 feet basketball court will open at the Water’s Edge building at Ohio 79 and Hilton Rd., featuring three hoops and plenty of room to run. Jacksontown United Methodist Church Pastor Bob Beyer said one of the first plans for the new court is to sponsor short court upward basketball for children kindergarten through fourth grade. “We’ll keep the teams small so everyone can play,” said Beyer.
Of course, after the young players are finished, there will be plenty of time for teens and older children to play half court. Score will be kept during all games, he said, noting that kids and parents naturally keep score, even during games that are supposedly scoreless. It’s just human nature. Water’s Edge needs volunteer basketball coaches.
Beyer believes the basketball facility is especially beneficial to Buckeye Lake Village, which doesn’t offer as many youth activities as other communities.
Beyer said the roof and sides are already on the facility and the floor will be poured soon. He said the bishop from the West Ohio Methodist Conference will participate in a ribbon cutting ceremony and block party on Monday, June 22 to celebrate its opening day.
Beyer said team sign-up is soon, and expects enough people to register for 16 teams.
Water’s Edge Ministry sponsors many youth activities, said Beyer, all of which function on donations. “We accomplish quite a bit on donations,” he said. Beyer and Pastor Carol Kirk both volunteer their time for Water’s Edge in addition to their responsibilities as Methodist pastors. “We love being in the community,” said Beyer.
