Warren G. “Hoppy” Hiles, age 98 of Thurston, passed away Sunday, January 20, 2019, at the Pickering House in Lancaster. He was born September 8, 1920, in Thurston to Charles and Inah (Hartman) Hiles. Hoppy graduated from Thurston High School, Class of 1939 and married Velva B. Clark on March 23, 1941. He served in the Army during WWII. Hoppy worked for Anchor Hocking, served as a deputy sheriff and then retired from the Ohio State Highway Patrol. He was a member of the Thurston Baptist Church and Thurston United Methodist Church; American Legion Post #11; and the Baltimore VFW.
He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Beery, of Lancaster; sons, Roger (Ruthann) Hiles, and Larry (Carolyn) Hiles, both of Lancaster, and Jeff (Debbie) Hiles, of Logan; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one great great grandson; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and one sister-in-law. He is preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Velva B. Hiles; grandparents by whom he was raised, Dan and Alice Hiles; and two brothers and sisters-in-law.
Funeral service with military honors will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 25, 2019, at Sheridan Funeral Home. A private interment will follow at Old School Baptist Church Cemetery in Thurston. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
