Waldon Russell Bruce Sr.




A celebration of life service for Waldon Russell Bruce Sr., 89, of Thornville, was held July 2, 2010, at Brucker & Kishler Funeral Home for immediate family members only. Graveside service with military honors was conducted by the Licking County Veterans Alliance at Wilson Cemetery with Tom Meyers, pastor of Hospice of Central Ohio, officiating.

Mr. Bruce passed away on July 1, 2010, peacefully at his residence surrounded by all of his family members. He was born July 1, 1921, in Nelsonville, Ohio to the late William David Bruce and Zora (Davis) Bruce. His parents that raised him are the belated Walter and Bertha Grose.

During World War II he worked at the U.S. Navel Center in San Diego, with his knowledge of aircraft from July 26, 1943 to December 11, 1945 and received a Honorable Discharge. Mr. Bruce was employed and retired from Curtis Wright, North American, and Rockwell and now known as Boeing, Columbus. He was a toolmaker for 47 years. He enjoyed collecting guns, tools, saws and he loved going to the Red Barn and garage sales.

Waldon is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 61 years, Patricia Mae (Nott) Bruce of Glouster, Ohio. They were married on June 25, 1949. Five children would complete their family of a don and four daughters: Waldon Russell Bruce Jr. of Thornville, Dorothy Ann (Greg) Coyle of Heath, Mary Kathryn Bruce of Lancaster, Margaret Marie (Randy) Rine of Newark, and Marilyn Rose (Robert) Worthington Slater II of Millersport. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Waldon Russell Bruce III of Thornville, Brian Michael Bruce of Heath, Kendra (Ryan) McCray of Thornville, Randall Marie Rine, and Megan Mae Rine of Newark, Benjamin Vincent Hill of Reynoldsburg, Elizabeth Ann Slater and Jeffrey Worthington Slater of Millersport;

three great-grandchildren, Brian Junior Bruce and Zachery Michael Bruce of Newark and Aubrey Paige McCray of Thornville; and a special grandchild, Johanna Nicole Whetstone of Millersport will always be remembered. Waldon had a special friend for many years and every Thanksgiving Day was spent with Kenneth and Judith Potts of Nelsonville who are deceased.

He was preceded in death by his three sisters and brotherin laws, Thelma Louise (Leslie) Dawson of Nelsonville, Mabel Marie (Leonard) Congrove of Stewartville, Ohio, and Theola Bruce who died at the age of nine months.

Memorial contributions may be given to Hospice of Central Ohio.
