Dawes Arboretum – Ohio 13, three miles north of I-70.

Creatures of the Night Halloween Walk – 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, October 27. Cost: Non-members – $7; Members – $5. Celebrate Halloween with this family-friendly night hike. We will travel around the grounds in search of Ohio’s most notorious nocturnal animals, so come ready for excitement and fun. Staff will assist the group in calling for owls, listening for bats and much more! There will be moderate walking during this program, so be sure to wear good outdoor shoes and dress for the weather.

Thanksgiving Wreath Workshop – 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 4. Cost: Non-members – $40; Members – $30. Create a beautiful wreath to decorate your entrance for the Thanksgiving season. Let natural materials spark your creativity to create your own unique look. All materials will be provided; please choose between a rustic or glittery look for your creation.

Speaker Series: Lighten Up for the Holidays – 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 11. Recommended donation is $2 per person. Shari Gallup from the OSU Extension Office will share practical ways to lighten up your favorite recipes for a healthier holiday season.

Clay Victorian Holiday Ornaments – from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 11. Cost: Non-members – $30; Members – $25. Paint and decorate a trio of ornaments to adorn your holiday display. These Victorian-inspired decorations are hand-crafted by local clay artist, Mary Grace Robertson. You’ll take home a star, a snowflake and a cone, perfect for displaying springs of greenery or flowers.

Grafting the Right Way – from 8 to 11 a.m. or 1 to 4 p.m. on Friday, November 17. Cost: Nonmembers – $40; Members – $3. In this hands-on workshop, The Arboretum’s Propagator instructs participants on the art and science of grafting to ensure future success in reproducing plants at home. Rootstock and scion wood are provided; attendees may bring their own scion wood, if appropriate rootstock is available. All participants take home their own grafted material to nurture. This workshop is appropriate for ages 14 and above. Children must be supervised by an adult.

Green Friday Walk – from 9 to 11 a.m. on Friday, November 24. Don’t sit around or go holiday shopping – relax outdoors on a nice leisurely stroll as you walk off all the turkey, stuffing and pie you enjoyed on Thanksgiving Day! Traverse paved and unpaved trails as well as uneven terrain with the Executive Director, Luke Messinger. Dress for the weather. This program is free however we do request registration.

A Landscape for the Ages – from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 2. Cost: Nonmembers – $10; Members – Free. There are sometimes events that change the course of things for many years. What are some events that have occurred in the past that have helped evolve The Dawes Arboretum into the institution it is today? This PowerPoint lecture will cover collection history and development, storms, insect invasions and other factors that have had, or could have, great impact in the future development of The Arboretum.

Granville Farmers Market – Granville. Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to noon on North Main Street between Broadway and College streets. All kinds of good thing to eat and drink.

Halloween Canned Food Drive – Hebron. The Lakewood High School National Honor Society is having their annual Halloween Canned Food Drive from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 26, in front of Clay’s Café in Hebron. The cans collected will be donated to help local food pantries and the school’s Lancer Locker that provides food and supplies to students. We will also be walking door-to-door asking for donations of canned goods. Hope you stop by!

“A Haunted Happening” – Newark. Join the Licking County Historical Society for some old-fashioned Halloween fun for the whole family from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, October 28, at the historic Buckingham Meeting House, located in the Old Graveyard (today known as Veterans’ Park – 5 N. Sixth Street, Newark). Witches and ghosts will be haunting about, and you may even bump into a ghoul or two. Start the evening by enjoying a hearty soup supper prepared by Let Me Do It! Catering, then try your hand at games of skill (pin the tail on the cat, “bobbing” for apples, tombstone toss, and more!) for a chance to win a prize. Sit for a spell to hear a spooky ghost story that is sure to make your spine tingle, or have your fortune told by a travelling gypsy who specializes in palm reading and futures told. Halloween Open House – Baltimore Police Department. Stop by the Baltimore Police Department opposite the post office on West Market Street from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28. There will be free candy, hot dogs and drinks for everyone. Jerry Ayers will be carving pumpkins for the first time in years.

Santa’s Attic Sale – Granville. It’s that time! Santa climbed up the ladder and cleaned out his attic! He found 1000’s of gently used decorations. Learning Rocks – Education Expo – Ohio Expo Center. This special exposition from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 4, will help parents explore educational options for their children from traditional to special needs. Activities include the Education Options Expo for families from preschool to high school, seminars and lectures regarding school decisions and education topics, education planning information, and various education competitions and activities. Baked Steak Dinner – Millersport. A baked steak dinner for missions will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 4, at the Millersport United Methodist Church. The event includes a bazaar/craft sale and a bake sale. Tickets are available from any UMW members or call the church. Cost is $10 with children under 10 $7; carry out is available.

“Celebrating Community” – Baltimore. The Baltimore-Thurston Ministerial Association presents its second annual Community Resource Fair, “Celebrating Community,” from 2 to 4 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Family Life Center at Christ United Methodist Church, 700 S. Main St. The free event provides an opportunity for area residents to learn about services and opportunities offered through faith-based and civic initiatives, and to find ways to connect with local efforts of caring for one another and the world. The fair will highlight resources, groups, outreach and ministries that help meet needs of people of all ages, and will include hands-on activities for children as well as refreshments. Youth looking for community service opportunities and retirees interested in finding new purpose will find options for getting involved. Free Deer Field Dressing Workshop – Columbus. Hunters interested in learning to field dress and butcher their own white-tailed deer are encouraged to attend a free informational workshop provided by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife on Wednesday, November 8. Trained professionals will cover topics such as field dressing, skinning and butchering deer.

The workshop will be held from 6-9 p.m. at the Wildlife District One Office, located at 1500 Dublin Road, Columbus, 43215. The workshop is free of charge. National Roll Call Event to Honor Veterans Ohio University, Lancaster. Ohio University Lancaster will participate in the Remembrance Day National Roll Call from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, November 9 at the 3rd Floor West Green Patio on the campus of Ohio University Lancaster. OUL students, faculty and staff along with members of the community will participate in a reading of the names of fallen soldiers. A moment of silence will be held at 2 p.m.

Mid-Ohio Cluster Dog Show – Ohio Expo Center. This confirmation show, sponsored by four kennel clubs, will include approximately 2,000 dogs each day, representing more than 150 breeds, from all over the United States and Canada. Ohio Chinese Lantern Festival – Ohio Expo Center. Halloween Harmonies – Victoria Opera House, Baltimore. Enjoy a collection of the spookiest classical and contemporary music around performed by the Fairfield County Strings and Keyboard at 3 p.m. on Sunday, October 29. Free with donations accepted.

Theater

Doubt: A Parable – OSUNewark. Equity Actor Susan Pingleton* will make a special appearance in the play Doubt: A Parable by playwright John Patrick Shanley set to open at the Black Box Theater on November 9 on the shared campus of The Ohio State University and Central Ohio Technical College. She will be playing the role of Sr. Aloysius Beauvier. Pingleton is thrilled to be stepping back on stage, her first true love, at The Ohio State University at Newark’s Black Box Theater. She looks forward to exploring this production with the students at Ohio State Newark. In this brilliant and powerful drama, Sister Aloysius, a Bronx school principal, takes matters into her own hands when she suspects the young Father Flynn of improper relations with one of the 12-yearold male students.

Performances are at 8 p.m. on Thurs., Nov. 9 and will run through Sat., Nov. 11 and again Nov. 16-18. Additionally, there will be two matinees at 2 p.m. on Sundays, Nov. 12 and 19. All performances are held at the Black Box Theater in LeFevre Hall located on the Newark campus at 1199 University Drive, Newark, OH 43055. General admission is $10 and student tickets are $5 and may be purchased at the door.
