Events

Dawes Arboretum – Ohio 13, three miles north of I-70.

Stroller Stroll – 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays in June and July. FREE! Join a guide on a stroll along a paved path through our beautiful grounds. This is a great opportunity for parents or caregivers to enjoy some fresh air and exercise, while children explore the natural world around them.

Searching the Night Sky – 9 – 11 p.m. on Friday, June 10. FREE! Enjoy an evening of spring stargazing as we set our scopes to the sky. On a clear night, we will see the Moon, Jupiter, Saturn and Mars (its first appearance of the season!), simultaneously. Scopes are provided, or bring your own. Guests are encouraged to bring a blanket or chair and a flashlight. *Inclement weather date June 12.

Speaker Series: In Pursuit of the World’s Rarest Birds – 10 – 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 11. FREE! Bernard Master is a lifelong birder and internationally recognized conservationist. In this talk, he shares with us his most exciting adventures searching for the rarest birds in the world. His travel spans six continents and 105 countries. Master is the first American to see a representative from each of the 229 world bird families and has a world bird total of 7,800, placing him among the top ten American birders.

Insects Of The Night – 9 – 11 p.m. on Thursday, June 16. Cost: $5/$3 members. Experience the great outdoors at night as we attempt to attract a variety of nocturnal insects using special lights. Moths, beetles, flies, preying mantises and others may visit our sheets for a close-up look. Walk-ins allowed. Cash or check only at the door, please. Park in the Red Barn Area parking lot and follow the boardwalk back to The Barn. This program takes place at The Arboretum’s Red Barn Area on Davis Drive, just west of State Route 13. Walk with the Director – 8 – 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 25. FREE! Lace up your boots and hit the trail with Luke Messinger, Executive Director. Each month, walkers visit a different part of The Arboretum and learn more about our mission, current happenings and plans for the future. Expect a brisk pace!

The Visitors Center is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays and holidays. For more information visit www.dawesarb.org

Baltimore Farmers Market – Baltimore. This year’s market kicks off from 4 – 7 p.m. on Friday, May 6. It’s held weekly from 4-7 p.m. on Fridays through October 14. The market has moved to the small parking lot behind the Liberty Union Thurston Elementary School.

Buckeye Lake Farm Market – Buckeye Lake Village. The farm market has a new day this year. It will run from 2:30 – 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, beginning June 1 through Sept. 28, in the Goodwill parking lot on Ohio 79. Granville Farmers Market – Granville. It’s back!! Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to noon on North Main Street between Broadway and College streets. All kinds of good thing to eat and drink.

Movies in the Park – Johnson Park, Baltimore. LifeBridge Church and the Village of Baltimore are presenting six FREE outdoor movies on Friday evenings this summer. Movies start at dusk and include FREE popcorn and fun. Bring lawn chairs. Kids are encouraged to come dressed as the movie theme. The schedule is:

• June 10: Inside Out;

• June 17: The Incredibles;

• June 24: The Lego Movie;

• July 8: Finding Nemo; and

• July 29: Toy Story.

Freedom’s Never Free Memorial – Millersport. The Freedom’s Never Free Traveling WWII Memorial can be viewed around-the-clock at the Buckeye Lake VFW Post 1388 June 9-12.

Benefit Golf Outing – Thornville. The four-man scramble sponsored by the Thornville American Legion in memory of Commander Ronnie White tees off at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 11. Prizes include a new Polaris Ranger. Food provided. $50 per person with walk-ins welcomed. Proceeds benefit local veterans project including the traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall in New Lexington Aug. 25-29. MotorCycLicking Foothills Run – Utica. Join LCATS, Explore Licking County, and the Licking County Planning Commission for the first ever MotorCycLicking event. Grab your motorcycle or vehicle and join us for the inaugural ride of “Foothills Run”. The ride starts at Legend Hills Orchard in Utica, at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 11, and ends at Velvet Ice Cream at 3:30 p.m.. Snacks and refreshments will be available for purchase at both Legend Hills and Velvet, as well as the first ever MotorCycLicking tote bag. Get out and Explore Licking County with MotorCycLicking!

Basement and Bake Sale – Thornville. Stop by Grace Lutheran Church at 65 E. Columbus St., for their Basement Sale and Bake Sale June 9-11. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday and Friday; and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Ice Cream Social – Buckeye Lake Library. Kickoff the summer with an ice cream social from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 11. Kids of all ages are invited to stop by the library to eat ice cream, play games, create crafts, enjoy face painting, and sign up for the 2016 Summer Library Program with the Buckeye Lake Library staff! The library staff hopes to help you get ready, get set, and read this summer!

Visit with Farm Animals – Hebron Library. Join us as we welcome birds, rabbits and other small farm animals to the Hebron Library from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 14. Your entire family can join us (outside) as we get to know these animal friends courtesy of Christa from Bring the Farm to You. FREE!

P.T. Reptile Show – Buckeye Lake Library. Reptiles will be invading the Buckeye Lake Library at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 15! Amphibians, arachnids, and reptilian creatures will be presented by “Reptile Pete” Rushton to kids of all ages. Ever want to feel the scales of a snake or have a tarantula creep on your arm? Join the Buckeye Lake Library staff for an afternoon of hands on learning and fun with real, live reptiles.

Barn Yard Friends – Buckeye Lake Library. Some barn yard friends will be visiting the Buckeye Lake Library at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 22. Enjoy the Bring the Farm to You petting zoo, full of sweet farm animals including rabbits, goats, chickens, and sheep. The whole family can ask the Bring the Farm to You representative, Christa Hein, questions and learn how farms impact our day-to-day lives.

Independence Day Concert & Fireworks – Newark. Celebrate Independence Day this year on the shared campus of The Ohio State University at Newark and Central Ohio Technical College (COTC). The annual free concert and fireworks display will be held on Sunday, July 3. The evening’s celebration begins with the local cover band Sticks & Stones at 6:30 p.m., followed by the Heisey Wind Ensemble at approximately 8 p.m. The fireworks show begins at 10 p.m., with The Ensemble playing a mix of patriotic favorites to accompany the fireworks. After the fireworks, Sticks & Stones will return to the stage for an encore presentation.

A number of local vendors will be serving food and beverages on the campus grounds during the event. Bring lawn chairs, picnics and blankets for a fun-filled evening of music and entertainment. Free parking is available on campus.

Music in the Courtyard – Newark. This free summer concert series kicks off from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, June 10, in The Works’ LeFevre Courtyard, featuring local favorite Johnny Thief & the Kleptones. Rain or shine. Free park in The Works’ lot. Bring chairs or blankets as seating is limited. Bring or purchase a lunch plus free Velvet Ice Cream Treats. For more information, visit www.attheworks.org. Upcoming concerts are Celt’s Crossing on July 8 and Timberline Bluegrass Bank on August 12.

Music on the Front Porch – Thornville Library. Enjoy free music at 6 p.m. on Fridays through July 15. The line-up is: Perry Morgan Pickers (June 10), Open Mic Night (registration required) (June 17), Marty & Linda Savage (June 24), Joy in the Morning Ministries with Jeremy Shank (July 8), and High Society Dixieland Jazz Band (July 15 with a 7 p.m. start).

Music on the Lawn – New Lexington Library. Enjoy music Friday evenings at 6 p.m. through July 15. This summer’s line-up includes: Waste of White & Hill Folk Harmony (June 10), Marty & Linda Savage (June 17), Joy in the Morning Ministries with Jeremy Shank & The Sound of Dulcimers (June 24), Shawn Enright & High Society Dixieland Jazz Band (July 8), and Uncle James (July 15).

Concerts on the Green Granville. All performances are free and are held on Denison University’s Fine Arts Quad, 338 W. Broadway, Granville. Attendees are welcome to bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnics. Food trucks are returning this year, with one truck featured at each concert except August 13. In case of rain, performances will be held in Burke Hall.

Reaganomics – Sunday, June 12. The Columbus-based Reaganomics are Central Ohio’s the area’s most electrifying eighties show. Launched in 1996 in hopes that they could connect fans of 1980s music to that bygone era, the band covers hits from Tom Petty, Robert Palmer, Journey, Commodores, Van Halen, Bon Jovi and hundreds of others

Washboard Music Festival – Logan. The streets in downtown Logan will come alive with the annual Washboard Music Festival on June 16 – 18, 2016. The event honors the Columbus Washboard Factory that was purchased and moved to Logan from Columbus nearly two decades ago. It is the only factory in the United States that continues to manufacture washboards – thus the idea to establish a music festival that focuses on washboard music was born. Festivities kickoff Thursday evening when Arnett Howard and Friends perform from 6 pm – 9 pm. Friday has a lineup of performers day and night. Don’t miss Washboard Hank and 7 Mile Blue Grass on the main stage. The Sodbusters will be at the CIC stage as well as Washboard Hank, 7 Mile Blue Grass and Lone Raven. Sweet Funk will be at The Bowen House from 1-3 pm. Friday’s headlining acts feature Little Roy and Lizzie at 8 pm and then 3 Piece and a Biscuit at 9 pm. The night continues with Lone Raven starting at 10 pm. All music performances are free.

Families will enjoy the Children’s Park with rides. Mr. Puppet will be there to entertain the kids along with the magic of Dave Lehman. A Quilt Show, hosted by members of the Hocking Valley Quilt Guild, will be held at The Bowen House from 12 – 5pm on Friday and Saturday. Plus a classic car show will be held Friday from 5 – 9pm near the Columbus Washboard Factory. The historic Columbus Washboard Factory will be open to visitors from 9 am – 7 pm on Friday and Saturday. Saturday includes a tractor exhibit from 9 am to 5 pm. Afterward, enjoy the annual Washboard Music Festival Parade at 6 p.m.
