Preserving Your Family Documents – Saturday, Feb. 22, 10 – 11:30 a.m. Sign up now for a special class on paper conservation! The discussion focuses on the archival storage of paper documents and photographs and includes demonstrations of archival techniques and learning the quantity and needs of a typical family’s collection. Participants receive a conservation kit, including acid-free folders, a flip-top box, cotton gloves, L-sleeves and buffering paper. Meet at the History Archives Building, $35/$25 members

Yoga Classes – Buckeye Lake Library. The Buckeye Lake Library is hosting free yoga classes for any skill level. Classes will be instructed by Lenise Alexandra. The next class is set for 9 – 10 a.m. on Saturday, Mar. 1. Classes are free and open to the public. No registration is required to attend.

President’s Day Dinner – Newark. The Licking County Historical Society is hosting a President’s Day Dinner at the Historic Buckingham Meeting House on Saturday, Feb. 22. After the dinner, which will feature favorite dishes of past presidents, a special program, “February-A Month for Presidents ‘A Future for the Republic,’” will be presented by local historian E. Chris Evans. Cost is $28 for society members and $32 for non-members. Please call 740-345-4898 for reservations by Feb. 20.

Basic Computer Class – Buckeye Lake Library. Join us on from 10 – 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 22, for a basic computer class. Registration is required so please call 740-928-0472 to reserve your spot.

Soil Preparation and Composting for Gardeners – Hebron Library. Spring is almost here, so it’s time to get the garden ready for planting. Join Master Gardener Bob Wuhlforst from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 22, for a discussion of soil, compost, and generally how to make your soil the perfect home for your plants!

Edible Book Competition – Newark. As part of the Chocolate Fiesta celebration, the Main Library at 101 W. Main St. is hosting an Edible Books competition on Feb. 22, 2014. Participants are to make an edible creation that represents a book or book title. Prizes will be awarded for the Best-Tasting, Best Represents a Book or Title, Most Creative, and People’s Choice. Bring your creation to the library at 2:30 p.m. Judging will be at 3 p.m. and tasting for the public will be at 3:30 p.m. Registration is required by Feb. 17 for those who wish to enter an edible book. Pottery Workshop – Somerset. The next round of Pottery Workshops begins on Sunday February 23! Workshops are on Sundays from noon -4 p.m. and Wednesdays from 5:30-8:00 p.m. for 4-6 weeks- You can feel free to come on Sundays or Wednesdays or both days whatever your schedule will permit! Local Potter and Artist Jerrod Nash of Studio Mudd will be instructing the workshops and sharing his awesome talent with all participants!

Governor Jon M. Huntsman Jr. to speak – Denison University, Granville. Former Utah Governor Jon M. Huntsman Jr. will speak at Denison University at 8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 24, in Swasey Chapel (200 Chapel Drive). The lecture, “Restoring America’s Leadership at Home and Abroad,” is free and open to the public. Huntsman began his career in public service as a staff assistant to President Ronald Reagan. He has since served four presidents in critical roles around the world, including as ambassador to Singapore, deputy assistant Secretary of Commerce for Asia, U.S. trade ambassador and most recently as U.S. ambassador to China.

A Night of Murder and Mystery at the Art Auction – Heath. United Way of Licking County offers a night of art by well-known local artists, set within a thrilling, hilarious Whodunnit, featuring a mystery piece of art that will be unveiled after the winning bid. The event begins at 6:00 pm on Friday, February 28, at the Davis Shai House in Heath. Tickets are $50 per person and include entertainment, heavy hors d’oeuvres, plus coffee and dessert to end the evening. A silent auction and a wine grab are included. (A cash bar will be available.)

Free ACT/ SAT Combo Practice Test – Newark. Are you planning on taking the ACT or SAT? The Newark Library invites teens to take Kaplan’s free ACT/SAT combo practice test. The practice test will take place in the Lower Level Meeting Room of the Newark Library from 10 a.m. to approximately 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 08. Remember to bring a calculator and some No. 2 pencils. We will get started at 10:00 am and will finish at approximately 2:00 pm. Please feel free to bring snacks and a beverage. Tech-n-Tweens – Newark Library. Tweens can learn to program computer games, animations, and music from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 1, at Licking County Library’s downtown Main Library using “Scratch,” an easy programming language with laptops provided by the Library. Oscar Movie Madness – Newark. The Licking County Library will be showing four Academy Award Best Picture nominees back-to-back, the day before the Oscars, on Saturday, March 1, 2014. The first film starts at 9 a.m. and the last will be finishing at 5 p.m. at the Main Library, Meeting Room A, located in downtown Newark at 101 West Main Street, Newark. You must be 18 years or older to attend or accompanied by a legal guardian over the age of 18. Please bring identification. Free admission and popcorn.

“Irish Genealogy” – Newark. The Licking County Genealogical Society’s March meeting program is “Irish Genealogy” by Deidra McIntyre at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 2, in the first floor meeting room at the Licking County Library, 101 West Main St., Newark. Program is free and everyone is welcome.

Grant Webinars on Proposal Writing Strategies for Nonprofits – Newark. “More Asking, Less Writing,” a four-part series of live webinars presented by the Foundation Center, will be hosted at the Newark Library in March. The webinars will take place from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on March 5, 12, 19, and 26 at the Main Library’s Meeting Room A, 101 West Main Street, Newark. With nearly 110,000 foundations and thousands of corporate funders, all nonprofits have many opportunities to apply for and win the next grant. The challenge lies in determining the best ways to focus their time to identify new funders, make contacts, prepare and submit proposals, and cultivate each relationship. To help nonprofits meet this challenge, the “More Asking, Less Writing” webinar series lays out a time-efficient approach to the entire grant fundraising effort. The series of four webinars was designed to be taken together, but each webinar stands on its own and can be taken individually. Each webinar will be taught by experts in the field of grant fundraising.

Food for Fines Week – Licking County Libraries. Pay down your fines by donating canned goods during “Food for Fines” week. During March 3-9, bring in nonperishable food and/or personal care donations to any Licking County Library location. Each item donated will remove $1 of overdue fines from your card. Debt collection fees will not be waived. All items donated will go to the Licking County Food Pantry Network to support the Operation Feed fundraiser. Some accepted donations include: Canned meat/stews, peanut butter, packs of diapers, baby wipes, baby shampoo, spaghetti sauce, canned fruit, juice, personal care items, saltine crackers (1 lb. box), muffin mix, pasta, canned pork & beans, tuna, macaroni & cheese, and canned soups. No items requiring refrigeration, rusted or damaged cans, open packages or homemade food will be accepted. Even if you do not have any overdue fines, your food and personal care donations are still welcome. Drop them off at any Licking County Library location. Cash donations may be sent directly to the Licking County Food Pantry Network, 823 Steel Ave, Newark, OH, 43055.

Casey Weston – Newark. Former contestant on the hit television series The Voice, Casey Weston will be performing on the upper level of the Main Newark Library, as part of the library’s annual Chocolate Fiesta. The concert is set for 12:30p.m. on Saturday, February 22, and is free and open to all. She was one of eight finalists on “The Voice.” She has released two albums, a self-titled release in 2009 with 10 tracks and in 2013 she released a 13-track album called “Find the Moon.” Her voice – part Dolly Parton, part Stevie Nicks – is quite unique.

Heisey Wind Ensemble Winter Concert – Newark. The Heisey Wind Ensemble presents“American Stories” at their winter concert at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 22, in John W. Alford Performing Arts Hall in the John Gilbert Reese Center on the Newark Campus of The Ohio State University. The 60 member concert band is under the direction of Dr. Russel Mikkelson, Director of Bands at The Ohio State University in Columbus. Appearing as guest soloist will be award winning virtuoso pianist Dr. Caroline Hong an associate professor at The Ohio State University. She will be performing George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody In Blue”, setting for piano and wind ensemble. Tickets are only available at the door; $15 for adults, $10 for seniors (60+) and $5 for students. Ohio’s Youth Entertainers Stage Show Auditions – Granville. Got Talent? Want to Perform? We Need You! An exciting “vaudeville” musical variety performing company is holding auditions on Monday, February 24, starting at 6 p.m. in Granville. Calling all multitalented youths, especially boys, ages 7 – 19, interested in the performing arts who want to perform all over Ohio at fairs, festivals, and other events. “60 Years of Rock ‘N’ Roll” – Millersport. Millersport Community Theatre proudly presents the 2014 Minstrel “60 Years of Rock ‘N’ Roll” (a Musical Review Minstrel style), directed by Jill R. Henwood, and Mark A. Severance. In the first half the chorus and soloists will feature songs from the 50’s and early 60’s intermixed with jokes by our endmen and women. The second half includes songs from the late 60’s through today with various groups either singing or dancing. Everyone participates in the Grand Finale. Performances are at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28 and Saturday, March 1, at the Millersport Elementary Auditorium. Doors open at 7:30. Tickets are $8 and reservations are requested. Traditional American Music Festival – Mt. Vernon. Mount Vernon Nazarene University will host the first Traditional American Music Festival as a part of the 2013-2014 Lecture/Artist series from 6 – 8 p.m. on Friday, February 28, in the Hyson Campus Center cafeteria on the main campus of MVNU. Admission is $6, and the event is open to the public. Bring family and friends for an all-you-can-eat dinner and an evening of Bluegrass, Old Time, and Celtic music with JMJ Crescent, Sugar Creek Bluegrass, and Skeptikells. This will be a great opportunity to spend the evening together enjoying good food, good music, and good friendship.
