Ohio Sustainable Landscape Symposium – Saturday, September 15, from 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. Hosted by The Dawes Arboretum, in partnership with Licking County Master Gardeners

Learn about the benefits of native plants, their importance to the green industry, and practical approaches to sustainable landscaping. Discover new ways to integrate sustainable “green” ideas into widespread traditional practices. From the keynote address to the twenty-minute talks and garden tour, spend the day at this exciting symposium exploring a world of native plants that are both beautiful and ecologically important! One of the world’s most distinguished horticulturists, Allan M. Armitage, is a professor at the University of Georgia, Athens, where he teaches, conducts research on new garden plants, and runs the University of Georgia Horticulture Gardens. Additional symposium presenters include plant experts and designers from The Dawes Arboretum, The Ohio State University, and Central Ohio. $ 60 Symposium fee includes lunch and garden tour. Home School Investigations- Nature Scavenger Hunt -Tuesday, September 18, from 9 – 10:30 a.m. and.1 – 2:30 p.m., Discovery Center, $5 per student; preregistration required. Join other home school students in exploration of our natural world. Each 90-minute session includes a hands-on science study correlated with the Ohio Academic Content Standards for Science. Sessions are for ages six to ten.

Are We Going Nuts? Incorporating Nuts into Diets – Saturday, Sept. 22, 10 a.m. – noon. Go nuts for your health! Dr. Suzette Hamilton, D.C., C.C.S.P., returns to share fun facts on the nutrition benefits of nuts, a hearty gift of trees. Sample a few varieties and take home recipes to deliciously integrate this power food into the everyday diet. FREE, at the Visitors Center, donations welcome.

Storybook Science-Leaf Man – Thursday, September 27, 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., Discovery Center, Free/Donations welcome. Explore quality children’s literature in a natural setting. Each fortyfive minute session includes songs, games, crafts, creative movement, outdoor exploration and hands-on science suitable for ages three to five.

The grounds are open from dawn to dusk. The Visitors Center is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays and holidays. For more information visit www.dawes arb.org

Queen of the Lake Public Tours – Buckeye Lake. Enjoy a relaxing and interesting tour of Buckeye Lake at 2 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday aboard the Queen of the Lake II. Sunday Library Hours – Newark. Licking County Library’s Main Library began Sunday hours on Sept. 9. The library will be open from 1 – 5 p.m.

Meet Author Mary Katherine Arensberg – Hebron. Hebron Library will host author Mary Katherine Arensberg for a reading and book signing of her Civil War era drama, Willa, Thursday, September 13, 2012 from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. at the Hebron Library. Enjoy an interactive evening with the author followed by a question and answer session. Autographed copies of all of her books will be available for purchase at the event. Star Gazing Program – William C. Kraner Nature Center, Newark. Join Central Ohio Astronomical Society members for their monthly meeting and program as they discuss the latest news in astronomy. They’ll have telescopes set up for star gazing, weather permitting. 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15. FREE!

Ohio Nature Education is always looking for volunteers to work in different areas of our organization and we have internship opportunities. Create Custom Glass Beads & Pendants – The Works, Newark. The Works: Ohio Center for History, Art & Technology invites the public to drop-in the Glass Studio on Saturday, Sept. 15 from Noon – 4 p.m. to create glass beads and pendants. During this fun introduction to torchworking, participants will manipulate colored glass heated in the flame of a torch with assistance from a professional glass artist. This is a great activity to start your own custom glass jewelry collection! Participants receive a 45-minute instructional session in groups of four on the torch bench for $25 per person, per session. No appointment necessary and dropin’s are welcome. Experience Granville – Granville. Come to Experience Granville, a free community fair that features family-fun activities, including a polo game, bouncy houses, a MedFlight helicopter and lots of great food and items from Granville businesses. At the fair you can eat, shop, play, picnic, enjoy the entertainment and tour the mansion. You’ll have a great day and support your community at the same time – only Granville businesses and non-profits will be on hand to highlight their commitment to the Granville community, introduce their products, and provide samples. “Experience Granville” runs from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 16, at the Bryn Du Mansion (537 Jones Road), and is free and open to the public.

BLACA Fall Dinner Meeting – Buckeye Lake. Join the Buckeye Lake Area Civic Association for its annual Fall Dinner Meeting at 6 p.m. on Thursday, September 20, at the Buckeye Lake Eagles. Program includes an ODNR update by Regional Park Manager Hal Harper, a report by Buckeye Lake for Tomorrow watershed coordinator Merv Bartholow and viewing a new DVD on Buckeye Lake history. Community BarbecueThornport. Thornville builder Steve Dearlove and Worthingtonbased financial planner Mike Perez have opened an office together at Vendor’s Point, 14840 Zion Rd. in Thornport. To celebrate their new partnership, they invite the community to a barbecue from 4 to 7 p.m. Sept. 22 at the new location.

Columbus Buddy Walk – Columbus Crew Stadium. Please join Evan Bruckelmeyer of Millersport for the 11th Annual Columbus Buddy Walk starting at 9:45 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 23.

Hotlicks Bluesfest – Granville. The Bluesfest is a free event organized by the Granville Federation for the Appreciation of the Blues, which annually brings blues musicians from near and far to play. East Broadway between Main and Prospect streets is closed to traffic, with a stage set up at the west end and a beverage tent at the east end. In between, there’s plenty of room to set up lawn chairs, and even to dance. It’s a family-friendly event that draws thousands. Independents’ Day 2012 – Columbus. The indie celebration, which attracts thousands of people, features live music on four stages, artists, crafters, dancers, street performers, restaurants, food trucks/carts, beer tents, and a kids area. Battle of the Bands Newark. The Newark Library is offering a FREE “Battle of the Bands” Competition and Concert on Saturday, September 22 from 2:00 to 4:30 pm. The concert will be outside on the Newark Library’s grounds in front of an audience of all ages. Audience members are encouraged to bring a lawn chair for seating. Interested bands, battle it out for a chance to win a total of $150.in VISA gift cards; the Runner-Up Band will win a $50 VISA gift card! Half of the band members must be age 18 or under & must perform at least one original song to be judged. Bands must provide their own equipment except for the sound system, which will be provided for use.
