Dawes Arboretum – Ohio 13, three miles north of I-70.

Plant Sale & Garden Fair – 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Saturday, May 19. Pay a visit to our spring Plant Sale & Garden Fair featuring live and silent auctions. Purchase from many gems grown in The Arboretum’s nursery—several are rare and hard to find in local garden centers and nurseries. A variety of annuals, perennials, herbs and garden vegetables will be available for a one-stop shopping experience. Browse the array of wares and services in all areas of gardening, landscaping and home décor offered by merchants and professionals. The aroma of food will surely entice you to stay for lunch! Wagons are welcome to transport all of your treasures.

The grounds are open from dawn to dusk. The Visitors Center is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays and holidays. For more information visit www.dawes arb.org

All American Youth Horse Show – Ohio Expo Center, Columbus. The 44th Annual All American Youth Horse Show runs from 8 a.m. – 11 p.m. May 17-20. It features riding styles including Western, contest, reining, trail, hunters and jumpers. FREE. For more information visit www.aayhshow.com

WILDZFEST – The Wilds. Celebrate spring at WildZfest on Saturday, May 19, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Wilds. Guests of all ages will enjoy entertainment, food and drink, games, a special appearance by Dora the Explorer and Diego and more during his family-friendly fest. Guests are encouraged to make reservations for one the Wilds’ exciting tours including: Open Air Safaris, SafariTransports, Wild Animal Encounters and Zipline Safaris. Tours are available on the day of the event; however, reservations are recommended. Wilds tours are available at regular cost during WildZfest. Astronomy Program – William C Kraner Nature Center, Newark. Join the folks of Central Ohio Astronomical Society at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 19, for their monthly meeting. Telescopes on hand weather permitting. FREE!

Celebrating the Sun! – William C Kraner Nature Center, Newark. Join the folks at Ohio Nature Education and the Central Ohio Astronomical Society at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 20, as we celebrate the Annular Eclipse by offering hands on activities like safely viewing the Sun through a telescope along with other fun activities! FREE!

Thornville Memorial Day Parade – Thornville. The annual parade will begin at approximately 10 a.m. on Monday, May 28. The Sheridan Band, American Legion Color Guard, Legion Ladies Auxillary, Boy and Girl Scouts, police and fire escorts, as well as children’s decorated bicycles, will assemble at the elementary school. The Thornport AMVETS Honor Guard will meet the parade at the 20th Century Veterans Monument and at the cemetery for brief ceremonies in honor of the day. For further information, call 740-246-5049.

Buckeye Lake Carp Fest – North Shore Boat Ramp, Buckeye Lake. Help Buckeye Lake for Tomorrow reduce the lake’s excessive carp population. More than $2,500 in cash prizes will be awarded for carp caught during the second Annual Carp Fest June 8-10. The earlier date should mean cooler weather and more productive. Registration is just $5 per fisherman. Pre-register from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily at Z’s Village Market on Ohio 79 in Buckeye Lake Village. On-site registration begins at 3 p.m. on Friday, June 8. Cash prizes will be awarded for the most carp by weight caught over the 48-hour tournament and for the largest carp by weight caught during the same time. Daily cash prizes will also be awarded. There are separate cash prizes for youth (under 16), teams (two members) and families (up to four fishing and no more than two adults). For more information visit www.buckeyelakefortomorrow.org. 2012 Nelsonville Music Festival – Hocking College, Nelsonville. Stuart’s Opera House presents the 8th annual Nelsonville Music Festival, May 18th-20th at Robbins Crossing on the campus of Hocking College in Nelsonville. Columbus Bicentennial Pavilion Grand Opening with Michael McDonald – Columbus Commons. The Columbus Bicentennial Pavilion is the signature capital project for the city’s 200th birthday. The May 24 Grand Opening features a free concert at 7 p.m. with legendary performer Michael McDonald followed by fireworks. FREE, visit www.columbuscommons.org for more information.

Spring Hookahville – Thornville. Hookahville returns for Memorial Day Weekend May 25- 27, at Legend Valley near Thornville. The lineup includes two nights of ekoostik hookah, Yonder Moutain String Band, Gov’t Mule , Blue Moon Soup, Shrub, The Erika Hughes Band, Shank bones, Oakhurst, Cabinet, Freekbot, and more! Children 12 and under are admitted free, and the festival is an all ages event. Camping is included in the price of admission, with primitive camping services including bathrooms, medical staff and water. Vendors offer many different dining choices as well as a wide variety of merchandise. Alcohol is not sold at Hookahville; however you are free to bring your own.
