Dawes Arboretum – Ohio 13, three miles north of I-70.

Walking Tour of the Homestead- Saturday, Oct. 15, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Explore and enjoy the fall beauty of the original grounds and learn about the Dawes family, events that led to the purchase of the property, the tradition of tree dedications and other historical aspects of The Dawes Arboretum. See and hear the story behind the Dawes Memorial, former one-room schoolhouse and Zand Education Center. Walking distance is about 1.5 miles, $4/$2 members, meet at the History Center.

The grounds are open from dawn to dusk. The Vistors Center is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays and holidays. More more information vist www.dawes arb.org

Horizon of Hope & You – Longaberger Homestead, Frazeysburg. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, The Longaberger Company will hold its annual Horizon of Hope & You event at Longaberger Homestead Saturday, Oct. 1 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Entrance to the event is free, and activities include a limited edition Make-A-Basket opportunity ($39.95) for visitors, with a portion of the proceeds supporting breast cancer research and awareness. Other activities include a 5K Fun Run, 1 Mile Fun Walk and Kids Fun Run; a Health Fair; Kid’s Korner with featuring free tattoos, Matt the Balloon Guy and inexpensive craft projects; performances by The Dancing Divas; door prizes; and sales. Create Glass Blown Pumpkins – The Works, Newark. The Works: Museum of History, Art and Technology invites the public to drop-in from Noon – 4 p.m and create festive glass pumpkins in the Glass Studio every Saturday in October. Select pumpkin colors then receive personal instruction from a professionalglass artist who will help you craft a beautiful pumpkin. This glass experience is $30 per pumpkin and a great way to experience the art of glassblowing! No appointment necessary. Must be 9 years or older to participate. “What’s Available at the Licking

County Records Department” – Newark. That’s the program for the October meeting of the Licking County Genealogical Society at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 2. It is presented by William Markley, Records Clerk, Licking County Records and Archives in the first floor meeting room, Newark Library, 101 W. Main St. Meetings are free and open to the public. Lunchtime For Bats – William C Kraner Nature Center, Newark. Families are invited to join us from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 8, for a close up view of bats with LIVE BATS included. We’ll listen to the story of Stellaluna, pack a lunch for bats and tour the nature center bat cave. Call 740 967-8320 for registration. Cost is $10 per family or $3 per person.

A Haunted Night Out – William C Kraner Nature Center, Newark. Did you know that Licking County is an area of high paranormal activity? Join the members of C.O.P.S. as they share their experiences ghost hunting in central Ohio. We’ll have a few “not so scary” live wild animals on display to celebrate this spooky season. Paul Bunyan Show Guernsey County Fairgrounds, Old Washington. The 55th running of the Paul Bunyan Show is set for October 7-9, at the Guernsey County Fairgrounds in Old Washington, just 6 miles east of the I-70 / I-77 interchange in Cambridge. Sponsored by the Ohio Forestry Association, Inc.and Husqvarna, the Paul Bunyan Show (PBS) is a premier forest industry equipment exposition and forestry education event. It has grown over the years into an outstanding trade show with a variety of consumer activities that demonstrate the importance and fun of wood and the associated industry. Admission is $8 for adults, $4 for seniors and kids (age 7-12), and children under 6 are free.
