Dawes Arboretum Ohio 13, three miles north of I-70.

Dawes Art Show – Saturday, August 11 – 26, 8am – 5pm (Mon. – Sat.), 1 – 5pm (Sun.), free admission, at the Visitors Center, This is a joint art show between The Arboretum and Licking County Arts. It highlights artists from all over central Ohio. Visitors will experience works in media such as paintings, fabric art, photographs, sculptures and more. Opening night is Saturday, August 11, 6 – 8pm. Be the first to attend the show and mingle with all of the talented artists participating.

Night Hike- Friday, August 17, 8:30 – 10:30pm, Bring the kids and leave your sunglasses in the car for this evening stroll around The Arboretum grounds. The Naturalist will lead a hike through the forests, collections and hillsides while discussing natural history, wildlife and constellations in the dark sky above our heads. Free, meet at the Visitors Center Deck.

Butterflies Abound- Saturday, August 18, 2007, noon – 2pm, Join in a walk to search, capture and inspect some butterflies in our area starting at the charming Davis Barn. The Naturalist will talk about the connection between butterflies and host plants and about The Arboretum’s participation in the state-wide, long-term, butterfly monitoring project. $8/$5 members, reservation required, meet at the Davis Barn, located on Davis Rd. behind Maintenance Building.

22nd Annual Tour of Homes – Buckeye Lake. The Buckeye Lake Area Civic Association’s popular Tour of Homes returns Sunday, August 12 from noon to 3 p.m. Six homes built on western shoreline of Buckeye Lake are featured this year. Guests will travel to the homes by pontoon boats. Boats will load at the Buckeye Lake State Park at Liebs Island. Last boat out at 3 p.m. $15 donation.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day Thornville. Residents of Fairfield,Licking and Perry counties can get rid of hazardous and noxious chemicals collecting in their garages and basements for FREE from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, August 11 in the parking lot of the Thornville Elementary School. The collection day is sponsored by the Coshocton-Fairfield-Licking Perry Solid Waste District and the Perry County Recycling and Litter Prevention program. Only waste from residences will be accepted. NO WASTE will be accepted from businesses.

Dan Emmett Music & Arts Festival Mount Vernon. – The Dan Emmett Music & Arts Festival returns for its 20th year on the streets of downtown Mount Vernon August 9th – 12th. Named for Dan Emmett, the author of “Dixie”, the Festival’s mission is “Celebrate the Legacy” of his life and career by presenting a varied format of performing and creative artists. The Festival begins Thursday with the Homemades & Trades Show with local merchants, vendors, and crafters displaying their wares. Thursday evening entertainment is “Dance to the Oldies” featuring The Caffiendsat 7:00 p.m. – and then the Rock ‘n Roll rocks the stage when Phil Dirt and the Dozers step on at 8:30 p.m.

Friday’s theme is “Stars & Stripes and Pearly Lights, ” featuring one of the best youth bands in the USA – The All-Ohio State Fair Band. The three day Fine Arts & Craft Fair opens Friday featuring jury-selected nationally known artisans. Saturday’s Festival theme is “Art, Bluegrass, Rock, and More,” featuring area bluegrass performers and the traditional fiddle and guitar contests.

An authentic civil war era parade will step off from the Square at 10:30 a.m. Saturday leading to the birthplace home of Dan Emmett on the banks of the Kokosing River. The renowned Saxton’s Cornet Band will lead the parade and take part in these 19th century activities. At 9:30 p.m., Herman’s Hermits starring Peter Noone will grace the stage. On Sunday, the Festival will feature the theme “Arts, Crafts, Gospel, & More.” Registration for the car and antique sow is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with an awards presentation for the favorites at 4 p.m. Line Drive and The Nomads will rock the square throughout the car show. Also featured on the South Stage will be the best in praise and pure gospel music during “Gospel Sunday”.

American Soldiers Homecoming Festival Dennison, Aug. 10 through Aug. 12. This 1940s era, WWII event will surround the historic Dennison Depot. It will feature battle reenactments, Big Band music, USO Entertainment, parade, military vehicles and displays, vendors, mess tents, 1940s movies, reenactment of the Canteen, fly-bys and a memorial service.

Dennison Ohio is one of the only WWII Canteen sites still existing, and the only one that continues to serve free coffee and donuts every day to weary travelors.

This event will be one of the final salutes to the homefront. Veterans from all over the country and their families are encouraged to come back to Dreamsville one last time…and reunite with those who served on the homefront.

Even if you did not stop at the Dennison Canteen, but at another Canteen similar to Dennison’s, we invite you back as a symbolic gesture to remember volunteers who served at all canteens.

Cruisin’ On The CommonsMillersport. Coming to Historic Lions Park, Friday, August 17, 5 to 8 p.m., is the Millersport Lions’ last car show of the summer. Only $5 per vehicle gets your car, motorcycle or truck entered into the show. Registration is from 5 to 7 p.m. Trophies awarded at 7:30 p.m. Winners will be chosen by the trophy sponsors. There will be games, music, trivia, prizes and food. Historic Lions Park is located on Chautauqua Blvd in Millersport only a block from Buckeye Lake’s south shore. Nature Tots: The Itsy Bitsy Spider William C. Kraner Nature Center. Join the Licking Park District for another Nature Tots program on August 18 at 10 a.m. What do you know about spiders? Most people are afraid of spiders and would rather they never existed at all, but did you know they are very beneficial?Bring your toddler to this fun program to learn more about the itsy bitsy spiders. Participants will search for spiders and their webs, eat like a spider and see one up close! Your little one is guaranteed to have fun. Coshocton Canal Festival – Coshocton. Historic Roscoe Village hosts the annual celebration of its rich canal heritage August 18-19. Weekend activities will include an invitational craft show featuring handmade goods, traditional craft demonstrators, food booths, live musical entertainment and children’s activities Saturday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm and Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. To get a feel for the Canal Era, take a ride back in time with the 45-minute float down the section of the restored canal on the Monticello III, the horse-drawn canal boat in Coshocton Lake Park, from 12:00 noon to 5:00 pm throughout the weekend.

Gold Panning and FlintknappingFlint Ridge, Saturday, Aug. 11, 1-5 p.m. at Flint Ridge near Brownsville, visitors are invited to join Chris Miller for a presentation of gold prospecting. Learn how to look for likely gold deposits, how glaciers affected gold deposits verses ore gold and watch a demonstration of the tools of the trade such as a slush box and digging tools. Families then get a hands-on opportunity to experience the life of a gold prospector. Miller and Chris Stricklett also demonstrate the ancient art of flintknapping throughout the afternoon.
