Dawes Arboretum
– Ohio 13, three miles north of I-70.

Music in the Garden-
Third Sunday of the month, through September, 1:30 – 3 p.m., “Delightful Sounds.” Stroll through the All Seasons Garden and soak up the beauty while listening to the lovely sounds of music. Concerts are free of charge and are scheduled from 1:30 – 3 p.m.. Final concert is September 19. Bring a lawn chair or blanket if desired.

Home Gardening Series: Fall
Foraging & Preservation-
Sunday, Sept. 19, 1 – 4 p.m. Forage the woods, fence rows and fields in search of tasty edibles. Learn how to prepare some of these wild foods for immediate consumption and learn to preserve them for enjoyment later in the season. The focus will be on wild, edible, native fruits (persimmon, pawpaw, crabapple) and nuts (hickory, walnut, acorn). The C–TEC Culinary Arts Program will assist this class. $20/$15 members, reservation required, meet at the Visitors Center.

Leaf Collection 101
– Saturday, Sept. 25, 2 – 3 p.m. Kick start a leaf collection for science class or finish off those last dozen leaf identifications you’ve already started. Horticulture and Education staff will teach students how to properly collect, identify and label tree leaves using a simple key. $10 per child, meet at the Visitors Center.

Lake Tours
Buckeye Lake.
See historic Buckeye Lake by boat. Take a ride on the Greater Buckeye Lake Historical Society’s Queen of the Lake II. The 40-passenger boat cruises every Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. from May to October. Board at the Buckeye Lake State Park’s North Shore Ramp just off Ohio 79 in the Village of Buckeye Lake. 9/11 Walking Parade

Join Lieb’s Island Civic Association and the Millersport Marching Lakers at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 12 for the annual walking parade in memory of the 9/11 attacks.

Movie Night
– Buckeye Lake.
Early this year To Save A Life
took over theaters nationwide. This independent film about teens and the choices they make in their daily lives quickly struck a chord with teens and families. Overnight, the film received a #1 Fandango Fan rating and maintained it for over a month. Critics and youth workers raved, families were changed, and viewers consistently commented: “Every teen and parent needs to see this film.” First Community Church’s P40 Youth Group has raised money for a special screening of To Save
A Life
at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 12 at First Community Church, SR 79, Buckeye Lake. Admission is free and everyone ages 12 years and up is invited. Everyone who was touched by the film is invited back to the church beginning September 26 for the curriculum to help us change our community and schools. More information about To Save A Life

Bill Hayes, candidate for Ohio House of Representatives from the 91st District, is the guest for this month’s meeting starting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 15 at the South Short Center. Hayes will present his perspective on the current state of the state and be available for questions. The Patroits meet on the third Wednesday of every month at the South Shore Center on Ohio 13 at Township Road 391, approximately two miles south of Thornville. Everyone is welcome. Stop by every Friday from 5-7 p.m. through Oct. 22. The market is located on Ohio 256 between Basil and High streets. Broommaker Terry Dunlap will be demonstrating the art of broommaking as well as giving an historical talk on brooms on Sept 17 from 5-7 p.m. Gospel and country singer Jeremy Shank will br performing on Sept. 24 from 5-7 p.m.

The Thurston-Walnut Township Fire Department is holding a pancake breakfast on Saturday, September 18, from 8 a.m. to noon. Suggested donations are $5 for adults and $3 for children. The menu is: sausage, pancakes, eggs, sausage gravy, biscuits, orange juice, coffee, tea, and milk. Carry-out orders are welcomed: call 740-862-6542.F refighters will answer your questions about smoke/CO detectors, blood pressure, diabetic sugar checks, medication lists, and other questions you may have. They will also be taking orders for T-shirts and reflective address signs, which aid the firefighters in locating you in the event of an emergency.

Licking County Historical

Society Graveyard Walk

The Licking County Historical Society presents its annual Graveyard Walk beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 10, at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Cedar Street. A boy who found a hat belonging to President Lincoln; a Newark artist and civic activist and devoted wife: Licking County’s “original Boy Scout”; an acclaimed writer, photographer and newspaper columnist; founder of the important Scheidler Machine Works factory: a society lady who began a “Ladies’ Circulating Library” as well as the “Monday Talks” organization; and a horse breeder who now has ties to the Longaberger company are the colorful local citizens who will be “brought back to life” by actors from the Licking County Players Suitcase Theater Group! This event is open to the public. Cost: FREE for LCHS Members; $5 for Nonmembers. Raindate is 6 p.m. on Sunday, September 12.

Paul Bunyan Show

The Official Paul Bunyan Show, one of the nation’s largest and oldest forest industry trade shows, returns for its fifth year at the Guernsey County Fairgrounds on October 1-3. The show is sponsored by the Ohio Forestry Association and Husqvarna and is a celebration of Ohio’s Forest Industry, which contributes more than $15 billion dollars to Ohio’s economy and employs nearly 119,000 Ohioans. The Guernsey County Fairgrounds is conveniently located six miles east of the Interstate 77 and 70 interchange. Visitors will find more than 130 exhibitors who represent all facets of the forest industry throughout North America. Lumberjack entertainment will take place throughout the weekend as well as numerous educational sessions on topics such as: grinder and chipper safety and maintenance, tree identification, what everyone should know about pawpaws and firearm safety for “kids” of all ages. The International Lumberjack Competition will take place live at the Show on Saturday, October 2 and the Ohio State Competition will be held on Sunday, October 3. The National, Collegiate and Landowner Game of Logging finals will also be held throughout the weekend. Admission is $8 for adults, $4for seniors and kids (age 7-12), and children under 6 are free.
