The Works offers special programs for alternative schooling community

NEWARK – To help meet the educational needs of the alternative schooling community, The Works in downtown Newark is offering its “Art and Science Academy” programming through April, 2009.

The Art and Science Academy consists of monthly sessions held on the second Friday of every month, January through April. The only exception is the April session, which will be held on the third Friday of the month.

Students will be grouped in grades 1-4 and 5-8, with a maximum of 20 students in each group. Two 90-minute sessions, one art; one science, will run concurrently, with one group attending each session. Then, after a lunch break, the groups will switch. Participants will need to bring their own lunches and drinks.

The fee to attend the academy is $12 per day for members of The Works, and $15 per day for nonmembers. Necessary supplies are included in the fee.

Science topics covered will include electrical and math concepts, the electromagnetic spectrum and chemistry. Art topics will include textile arts, Pop vs. Op Art, a design project and printmaking. All sessions include hands-on activities.
