The case for Trump

Mercifully, the seemingly endless presidential campaign is almost over! The campaign has been going on for nearly two years. Like many voters, we’ve found it difficult to get excited, at least positively, about either major candidate. Both major candidates are seriously flawed.

But there is simply too much at stake to stay at home next Tuesday or throw your vote away on a third party candidate. It’s tough to write, but our next president will either be Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump.

At this point with two flawed candidates, we’re tempted to recycle one of Clinton’s infamous retorts – “What difference does it make?”

Who we choose as our next president makes a huge difference. On one hand, we have the arrogant, egotistical, rude and crude Donald Trump. He is not a politician (Good), but is very prone to say whatever pops up in his mind (Not so good). Trump seemingly can’t stay on message for more than a couple of days. At times in the last 60 days, it seemed like he was trying to lose the election with his off-the-wall comments and tweets.

But we have survived rude and crude presidents. In more recent history, Lyndon Johnson and Bill Clinton come to mind. With respect to women, Bill Clinton was a doer while Trump seems to be mostly talk. We’re also on the verge of surviving the most arrogant and egotistical president of all time – Barack Obama.

On the other hand, Hillary Clinton is best described as a pathological liar. Most of her lies are efforts to advance or save her political future, but others like claiming to brave sniper fire in Bosnia and being in New York City during 9/11 seem to be misguided efforts to make herself appear heroic. Scandal and corruption have followed the Clintons in Arkansas, the White House, the State Department and the Clinton Foundation.

Most presidents have lied to us, most recently Obama on just about everything of substance about ObamaCare and the deal with Iran. Hillary’s lying thread about her emails has been going on for more than a year. Even some of her supporters acknowledge her lack of trustworthiness. Can we survive a president that lies on the scale of Hillary? There doesn’t seem to be a historical comparison.

So let’s assume the worst about both Clinton and Trump. The Clinton campaign has spent millions trying to convince voters that Trump is unstable and could even start a nuclear war. Those claims seem highly exaggerated given Trump’s success in business. You can’t build a multi-billion dollar business empire by being unstable or irrational.

But let’s say Trump’s mouth starts causing some international incidents and that the investigations into Hillary’s missing emails and the Clinton Foundation find solid evidence that she exchanged favors as Secretary of State in return for donations to the Clinton Foundation or paid speeches for Bill. Obviously, we need to get rid of President Clinton or President Trump at that point.

Trump would be impeached; end of discussion. The main stream media has been bashing him for months and would watch his every move and nuance as president. Prominent members of the Republican Party and the conservative movement are actively opposing his election. They even have a name – Never Trumpers. They wouldn’t hesitate to begin impeachment proceedings, providing enough Republican votes to remove him from office.

If it’s President Clinton that needs to go, we’ll probably have to wait until 2020 for that to happen. Obama could pardon her before he leaves office January 20, making any criminal charges disappear. The media and Democratic Party are strongly behind her, ignoring and condoning her lies and corruption for years. No prominent Democrats have broken with Hillary. Even Bernie Sanders, who faced Clinton in a rigged primary with the active involvement of party leaders loyal to Clinton, supports Hillary and is actively campaigning for her across the country in this final stretch. In the Democratic Party, loyalty rivals that of the Communists in China and the old Soviet Union.

If Hillary is elected, we are likely stuck with her for four years regardless of the evidence that a real FBI investigation might turn up. Our first female president won’t be impeached no matter what her sins are. It would likely be a brutal four years as she tries to push her leftist agenda with just partisan support.

It seems crazy to make a case for a president based on their impeachability, but this has been a crazy election. All eyes will be on a President Trump, with the Never Trumpers looking for any opening to replace him with Vice President Mike Pence. Pence is the strongest of the four candidates and could govern effectively.

The case for Trump extends beyond impeachability. He does love America – if nothing else it has made him and his family very wealthy. He understands a nation must have secure borders to survive. Trump knows we need a strong military to protect our freedom and interests. Our enemies have become much stronger in the last eight years and their outright aggression is growing. The Iran deal sent the wrong message to both our friends and enemies.

Only time will tell whether Trump is a real conservative. But he has pledged to nominate Supreme Court justices that will protect the constitution, not rewrite it without our consent.

A President Clinton would try to turn healthcare totally over to the federal government. More government control that will lead to rationing will not give us better health care. It will be like dealing with the IRS; incomprehensible rules on their time schedule. She will try to gut the Second Amendment to stop the gun violence. Then only criminals will have guns. She has pledged to overturn Citizens United which means restrictions on our freedom of speech. That case is about an effort to shut down a movie critical of Hillary Clinton. In sum, you can expect more regulations, more taxes and much more telling us how to live our lives.
