Local pools help Lake Area beat the heat

MILLERSPORT, THORNVILLE – It’s no surprise to Thornville Pool manager Michael Palone that there were plenty of people splashing around in his community’s swimming pool Tuesday afternoon considering the day’s searing heat and steamy humidity. “We have a lot more memberships this year,” he said. What is surprising to both Palone, 21, and assistant pool manager Jenny Fellows, 19, is that they both ended up working at the pool after growing up with it. Both Palone and Fellows are Thornville natives. Fellows said she started working at the pool in various capacities when she was 14 years old. “I learned how to swim in this pool, and now I’m teaching people how to swim,” she said.

Palone said while pool attendance has increased from last year, it’s still been “hit or miss” this season, even on the hottest, muggiest days. “It’s been a good summer, though,” he said.

Thornville’s Harry L. Hite Memorial Swimming Pool is an approximately 5,200 square foot pool constructed in 1961, funded by a donation from the Harry L. (Doc) Hite estate. The pool’s open season coincides with the Northern Local School system summer session. The pool is maintained through a combination of generous community donations, membership fees, and support from the village. An annual volunteer pool-cleaning day occurs approximately one month prior to the season’s opening.

Around the lake, Thornville, Millersport, Baltimore, and Pleasantville all have public pools.
