At 9 a.m. on Saturday, August 30, we join the racing and fitness community in celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Sweet Corn Festival 5-K. It draws a wide range of competitors from across Ohio, young and old alike, that love the scenic route through the neighborhoods of Millersport and South Bank Road allowing all competitors to soak in the scenic beauty of the Ohio-Erie Canal, Summerland Beach, and Buckeye Lake.
The main reason this annual event has become a lake area tradition and continues to get better and bigger each year is due to the guidance, leadership and dedication of the race director, Coach Ken Kenner of Fairfield Beach. The race garners a slew of corporate sponsors and benefits the athletic programs at Millersport High School. Fifteen years ago, the Millersport Lions Club wanted to recognize the legendary, yet humble Coach Keener and renamed the 5-K the “Ken Keener Classic.”
It is not to late to register and help us celebrate this milestone, just go on-line at www.sweetcornfest.com and select the 5-K Run page where you can download a race entry form. We would love to see Coach Keener on a “high-five” when he meets old friends, former students and fellow coaches on August 30 at the starting line.
Without the support and cooperation of everyone living along the race course, the water station hosts, on-site registration volunteers and timers, the Millersport Fire Department, the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office, the Millersport Police Department, the Walnut Township Trustees & Road Maintenance Crew, Millersport Street Commissioner Gil Arnold, Mayor Dean Severance and the Millersport Village Council we would NOT be celebrating the 25th anniversary of a significant event dedicated to a wonderful man…Coach Ken Keener!
