Students can compete in patriotic art contest

Editor:

I have been writing Letters to the Editor for about six years now. Recently several people have told me how much they enjoy reading my letters because they are always positive. That’s what The Ladies Auxiliary to The VFW is, positive. Our goal is to help our Veterans, our community, and our youth. The Young American Creative Patriotic Art Awards is one such positive program we promote.

This Patriotic themed art must be on paper or canvas. Watercolor, pencil, charcoal, crayon, tempera, acrylic, pen-and-ink, or oil may be used. Digital art is not accepted. Please do not frame. Submit art on stretcher frames. Other entries must be matted on white. Do not use color mats. The art should be no smaller than 8” x 10” but no larger than 18” x 24”, not including mat.

Students must be in grades 9 through 12. Students must attend school in the same state as the sponsoring Ladies Auxiliary. Home-schooled students are eligible, foreign exchange students are not. Students need to complete an entry form and attach it to the back of entry. Package art so it can be mailed without damage.

Students must have their entry to The VFW Post #1388 by 5 p.m. on March 31, 2015. There will be local judging with monetary awards, and then on to National judging. The National Judging takes place May 5, 2015. First prize in the national contest is $10,000, a plaque and airfare plus two nights’ lodging to attend the Ladies Auxiliary National Convention. The firstplace art will be featured on the cover of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Magazine and on the Auxiliary website.

This is a wonderful opportunity for students in our area to show us their stuff. For an application and additional rules and helpful hints, please call me at 740-929-2617 and I will send you an application.

God Bless Our Veterans and God Bless The United States of America.

Lauralyn V. Palmer, Pres.
LAVFW #1388
