Robert E. “Bob” Baird




A funeral service celebrating the life of Robert E. “Bob” Baird, age 88, of Thornville, will be held at 6 p.m. on Sunday, October 29, 2017, at the Thornville home of Hoskinson Funeral and Cremation Service. Visitation will be held on Sunday, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home, 56 S. Main St., Thornville.

Bob was born in Newark, on March 22, 1929, to the late Glenn and Naomi (Cole) Baird. He passed away on October 24, 2017, at Thornville Health and Rehab Center.

Bob proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for three years. After his service, he went to work for the City of Newark Water and Wastewater Department (downtown office) and retired after 38 years, to play golf and mow grass.

Bob was a very gifted pocket billiards player. He started playing at the old Y.M.C.A. in Newark at the age of eight. Between the ages of 15 and 18, he was playing many of the best pool players locally and throughout Ohio. He also played in Texas, Colorado, Florida and Michigan, to name a few. While overseas, he played in several countries including Germany (Munich), where he was stationed for two years.

He was also an avid golfer; was president of a senior golf travel league; was active in Little League baseball; hunted Indian artifacts with his wife for many years; and was also a very good poker player during his lifetime.

Survivors include his loving wife of 50 years, Peggy (Boring) Baird, whom he married June 1, 1967; daughter, Jennifer (Ed) Hearne; son, Jeffrey (Misty) Baird; grandchildren, Cooper, Carter and Calista Baird; sister, Eloise Farrington; nephew, Rick Farrington; and numerous friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Earl and Richard Carl Baird.
