BUCKEYE LAKE – Carp was worth about 62¢ a pound at last weekend’s Carp Fest.
Buckeye Lake for Tomorrow paid out $3,190 in cash prizes for a record 5,114 lb. haul. That’s over 2.5 tons! T-shirts were given to any angler bringing in at least 15 pounds.
In three years, Carp Fest has removed more than five tons of carp from Buckeye Lake. The bottom feeders stir up the sediment, releasing phosphorus to the water column, providing a critical nutrient for the growth of harmful algae.
This year’s BLASST Monster Carp weighed in at 16.3 pounds compared to last year’s 20.8 pounds. Connor Stonerock of Circleville landed it. Dinty Musk Jr. of Columbus won the Buckeye Lake Marina Big Haul with 450.4 pounds, more than doubling last year’s 200.6 pound catch. He also caught the most fish each day by weight, but wasn’t eligible for those prizes.
Carp Fest will return next year, most likely set again for the second weekend in June.
