Poppy Day set for this Saturday

MILLERSPORT – Poppy Day is Saturday, May 2. Members of the Millersport American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Unit 637 will be distributing poppies on the streets and at businesses.

Poppy Day is sponsored each year by the American Legion Auxiliary to remind Americans of the sacrifice of life and health made by the men and women of our armed forces. The petals are a rich scarlet color and like our hospitalized veterans, this plant cannot live alone, but thrives in groups. Poppies are hand made by veterans and are never sold. Contributions are devoted entirely to rehabilitation and child welfare work for veterans and their families and conducted through the American Legion Auxiliary.

Allison Zollinger is the 2009 Little Miss Poppy Queen. She is the daughter of Ryan and Terri Zollinger and is a third grader at Millersport Elementary School. Allison is a Junior Auxiliary member through her great grandfather Fred Zollinger who served in the Army during WWII.

The Auxiliary’s Annual No Bake-Bake Sale is also held in May. Members of Unit 637 are asked to make a monetary donation. All donations are welcome. Please get donations to Carol Kitzmiller.

Sagmon Hill dishcloths are on sale at the Olde Canal Restaurant for $1.25 each or four for $5. They are excellent dishcloths and make great gifts.
