Kathleen Scott, formerly of Washington Court House, celebrated her 104th birthday Tuesday with her family at Autumn at the Lake outside of Thornville. She grew up on a farm in Indiana in a home without electricity or indoor plumbing. Her daughter, Sue Rettig of Gratiot, above right, recounted how word of a oncoming car was received by phone with time for Scott's mother to dress up the children to sit by the road to wait for its passage. She is joined by her granddaughter, Kathleen Race of Columbus, in the photo. Scott was the librarian at Washington Court House High School, retiring in 1970. She drove until she was 97 and lived alone until almost 100. Her longevity is attributed to

She drove until she was 97 and lived alone until almost 100. Her longevity is attributed to “orneriness” and good genes. One sister lived to 105 and another to 103. Her brothers lived into their 90’s. She never smoke or drank. Scott doesn’t take any medications. She is very hard of hearing and is a bit confused at times. Beacon photo by Charles Prince.
