Lakewood senior Gabbie Cerovski’s mother, Marsha Zimmerman, and Owens Community College assistant women’s basketball coach Stephen Perry surround Cerovski as she signs for a full two-year basketball scholarship at Toledo’s Owens Community College. The contract is worth $6,704. Cerovski carries a 3.65 GPA. “Gabbie is going to be a great ambassador to our school,” said Perry. “She knows how to score points; she knows how to get it done.” Perry said his program’s goal every year is a national championship. “We feel we’re going to be a strong contender.” He credited Cerovski and several other strong recruits for his optimistic view. Perry described Cerovski as “very coachable” and eager to improve her game. For example, he said he told her after one of her games that she needed to increase the three point shots she was making per game. Sure enough, Perry said, the next time he watched her play, she completed more three pointers during the game. Beacon photo by Scott Rawdon.
