Lakewood’s Lady Lancers avenged their only loss this year in spectacular fashion in the Division II Central District final in Pickerington last Saturday. It was the third meeting this year with the Licking Valley Lady Panthers. Both lost at home by one run to their rival. The 29-1 Lady Lancers scored first taking a 1-0 lead in the third inning and adding another in the fourth. The Panthers tied it up in the sixth inning. Lakewood threatened to end it in regulation with two back-to-back singles with two outs. Kori Locke ended the threat with a strikeout. She had a total of nine. The Panthers threatened in the ninth inning, loading the bases with two outs. Kori Caughenbaugh lined out to Audrey McCullough to strand the three runners. Olivia Martin then lead off for the Lancers and was hit by a pitch. Senior Meggin Kelley then hit the first pitch for a walk-off left field home run. The Lancers 4-2 victory denied the Panthers their fourth consecutive district title. It was the Lancers first district title since 2011. Lakewood takes on 18-10 Zanesville Maysville in the regional semi-final at 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 28, at Pickerington Central High School. The winner meets 16-4 Fairfield Union in the regional final at noon on Saturday, May 30, at Pickerington Central High School. Fairfield Union beat 22-7 Dover 2-0 Wednesday. Lakewood is ranked #3 in final Division II state poll, just three points behind #1 Greenville. Licking Valley had been ranked #6 but fell out of the top ten after the loss to Lakewood. Granville finished #8 in the poll and could meet up with Lakewood in the state final. Liberty Union’s Lady Lions lost the Division III Central District Final 5-0 Saturday to Richwood North Union. North Union was ranked #2 in the final state poll. In baseball, the Liberty Union Lions (15-14) won the Division III Lancaster district final Friday 6-4 over Columbus Bishop Hartley.
