Phillip “Phil” Freas

A funeral service celebrating the life of Phillip “Phil” Freas, 54, of Thornville, was July 30, 2008, in the chapel of Hoskinson Funeral Home, Kirkersville, with the Rev. George Gordon officiating. Burial was at Fairmount Cemetery in Jacksontown.

Phil passed away July 24, 2008, at home in the presence of his son. He was born Jan. 13, 1954, in Newark to Helen (Hayes) Decker and the late Harold Freas.

Phil was a member of Heath Masonic Temple Crusader Lodge No. 720 F&AM for 25 years.

Phil was passionate about many things in life, the most recent of which was his return to school in 2001 after a 27-year absence. He was very proud of the fact that this allowed him to earn his Bachelor of Arts degree in history, on March 16, 2008, from The Ohio State University.

Phil had a zest for life and he enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, and watching the birds, butterflies and animals around the home where he had grown up and lived for most of his life. In recent years one of his greatest passions was feeling the wind on his face and the sun on his back when he was riding his pearl white 2002, 883 Hugger Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

In addition to his mother, surviving are his wife and best friend of 24 years, Karen (Bigham) Freas, whom he married on Aug. 27, 1984; son, Shawn Phillip Freas, of the home; daughter, Lindsay Dawn Freas, of Newark; one brother and sister-in-law, H. Clark (Zeke) and Donna Freas, of Hebron; sister-in-law, Kathy “Freas” Litten, of Newark; nieces and nephews, Catherine, Stephanie, David Lee and Andrew; great niece, Hannah; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends, and his four-legged companion, his cat, Bailey.

Preceding Phil in death were his father and one brother, H. David Freas.
