A Mass of Christian Burial for Paul V. Powers, age 88, of Thornville, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 9, 2015, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Newark with Rev. J.C.P. Sullivan, Parish Priest, as celebrant. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery where the Licking County Veterans Alliance will provide military honors.
Paul passed away January 5, 2015, at his residence. He was born November 7, 1926, in Newark to the late Paul Powers and Leah Ruth (Wiseman) Smart.
Paul served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He retired in 1985 from Owens- Corning after 42 1/2 years as a Group Leader. Paul enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling and helping his son with his logging business, Jim Powers Logging.
He is survived by his wife, Ferlinda Powers; a son, James P. (Diane) Powers of Heath; a daughter, Miraflor Powers of Newark; two grandchildren, James Jeremy “JJ” Powers and Siarah Bush; a half-brother, Roy (Sharon) Smart of Zanesville; a sisterin law, Elaine Edington of Amanda; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, David Powers; a half-brother, Dale Smart; and a brother-inlaw, Gerald Edington.
Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, January 8, at Newark Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta-Stickle Funeral & Cremation Service, 59 North Fifth Street.
