Pastors to tackle the tough questions

HEBRON – Two local pastors plan to tackle the tough questions of the Christian faith.

Pastor Brian Harkness of New Life Community Church and guest Pastor Jeff Gill, formerly of Hebron Christian Church, are teaming up for the ambitious March sermon series at New Life. Harkness, who has been a pastor for more than 15 years, has learned that most Christians know what they believe, but aren’t sure why they believe.

“Christians sometimes get angry or defensive when you start asking tough questions,” he explained. “The Church and pastors haven’t really done a good job preparing people to answer tough questions. Questioning Christianity has been considered taboo – a weakness or lack of faith.”

“My biggest concern is there are a lot of people looking for truth and God,” Harkness added. “They want real answers. They aren’t going to swallow whatever you tell them, without investigation.”

He cites Bill Maher’s recent movie “Religulous” as an example. “His questions aren’t new,” Harkness said. “Here we are in 2009 and Christian people can’t answer those questions. So we aren’t saying that we have to throw out science in order to be a Christian.”

One of the most important questions to answer is whether something is true just because you believe it to be or is truth rooted in history, archeology and science. The series is rooted in 1 Peter 3:15-16 – “But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.”

Harkness and Gill will be tackling questions like:

• Is there historical evidence to back up the Christian faith?

• Is the Bible reliable?

• What about evolution and creation?

• Are the Bible and science mutually exclusive?

• Is the Bible always meant to be taken literally?

• If God loves us why is there so much suffering in the world?

• What about homosexuality and Biblical morality?

• How can we believe in the resurrection?

The series starts this Sunday, March 1 at New Life Community Church and continues each Sunday through March. Services begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Lakewood Middle School on U.S. 40. New Life has a spiritually diverse congregation and welcomes everyone seeking a relationship with God. For more information, visit www.HEDIED4.US
