Park District extends bike path patrols

NEWARK – The Licking Park District announces a recent agreement with the City of Newark to extend the District’s daily safety patrols on to the City’s bike trails. After discussions with Mayor Bob Diebold, the Park District agreed to provide this high visibility patrolling on a six month trial period beginning immediately at no cost to the City.

The District has used marked patrol vehicles on its 25 miles of bike trails since 2006, says Russell Edgington, Park District Director. As a result of these patrols and other efforts, we have seen an 85% reduction in rules violations by bike trail users. We believe that Licking County’s bike trails are now among the safest recreational facilities in the nation.

The Park District and Diebold are continuing discussions that explore ways the two agencies can provide the most efficient and effective operation of bike trails and other recreational sites. For more information, the Licking Park District at (740) 587-2535.
