Ohio’s top 10 liquor brands in 2008

COLUMBUS – Ohio Director of Commerce Kimberly Zurz recently announced that dollar sales of spirituous liquor reached a record level of $719.2 million in 2008. The 2008 dollar sales exceeded last year’s total by $32.6 million or 4.75 percent. Zurz said increased dollar sales combined with efficient management by the Department of Commerce, Division of Liquor Control, resulted in a net profit of $213 million and an all-time profit margin of 30.1 percent. This allowed for a total contribution of $298 million to the state’s treasury.

Volume sales for 2008 increased to 10.5 million gallons, an increase of 270,153 gallons or 2.64 percent over 2007.

“Ohio has seen a steady increase in liquor dollar sales for several years, mostly due to increases in product prices, a continuation of the trend of consumers buying more premium priced products, and a rise in the level of consumption,” said Zurz.

The top 10 selling brands of spirituous liquor by gallons sold in Ohio for 2008 were the following:

1. Kamchatka Vodka- 380,465 gallons

2. Jack Daniels Tennessee Whiskey- 359,873 gallons

3. Bacardi Superior Light Rum- 328,920 gallons

4. Captain Morgan Spiced Rum- 285,763 gallons

5. Jegermeister- 284,488 gallons 6. Smirnoff Vodka- 277,937 gallons

7. Crown Royal Canadian Whiskey- 275,027 gallons

8. Absolut Vodka- 267,159 gallons

9. Black Velvet Canadian Whiskey- 250,070 gallons

10. Korski Vodka- 227,403 gallons

Money collected from the sale of the spirituous liquor and the associated tax revenues are used to help fund a variety of state services that benefit all Ohioans.
