Night work starts on dam project

LIEB’S ISLAND – Night work began in earnest last Wednesday night on the West Bank end of the dam replacement project.

Two shifts a day will work at least 20 hours daily, weather permitting. That schedule is expected to run into late Spring. Work stops by about 2:30 a.m.

West Bank residents will get some relief from the near constant sounding of backup alarms by Jan. 14. Workers were expected to finish the first of a number turnouts Wednesday night. See the top three photos at left.

The large dump trucks hauling the bank run for the 30-foot wide stability berm had been backing down the berm from the Lieb’s Island staging area. The first turnout, which is about 1,400 feet from Lieb’s Island, will allow the dump trucks to head straight to the turnout before turning to back down the berm.

Residents between Lieb’s Island and the first turnout will still hear a truck roaring by every few minutes, but will be spared the near constant piercing beep from the backup alarms.

The below freezing temperature is now causing some material to stick to the beds of the over-the-road trucks delivering bank run to the Lieb’s Island stockpile. The banging tailgates as the drivers try to shake the stuck material out will be an intermittent nuisance noise until temperatures get back above freezing.

Two loaders are now working the stockpile. Over-the-road trucks are dumping on the west end while the off-road dump trucks are being loaded on the east end.

Docks have been removed up to the dam’s second corner. Outreach coordinator Ian Nickey reports that materials from the former docks are being stored for up to 60 days. Owners may reclaim materials if they so choose. If the materials are not reclaimed, they will be discarded after 60 days. Dock owners are instructed to schedule an appointment at least 24 hours in advance to pick up their materials by calling ASI between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, at 740-467-9903.

Work is much slower on the North Shore end of the project. Fence construction did begin last week and extends nearly to the regulatory spillway.

No docks have been removed though it appears some interior work is being done inside the two unit house on stilts over the lake just north of the Buckeye Lake Yacht Club bridge. That house and the extensive covered docks at Boat Boys and the yacht club will have to be removed before the berm can get started.

A construction barge and small tug from an Indian Lake contractor have been delivered to the North Shore. That setup will likely be used to remove docks since the water is probably too deep for the amphibious excavator being used on the Lieb’s Island end.
