Most building projects require a zoning permit

Editor:

I want to write a little about zoning regulations in Thorn Township.

It’s the season for construction and outdoor projects. Some thing may be required before starting your next project.

• A zoning permit is required on ALL new builds, including stick-framed homes, modular homes and house trailers; remodels (which increase your living space); decks; covered/enclosed porches; boat docks/covered boat docks; and accessory buildings, including but not limited sheds, unattached garages, pole barns and car ports.

• If your project does not fall within the parameters of the current Zoning Regulations, including but not limited to front, side or rear yard setbacks; and minimum square footage, you may file for a Variance with the Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) asking for an exception to the current rules.

• The Zoning Inspector has thirty (30) days from the date of application to either issue/deny the permit request. If your request is denied, you may file an appeal with the BZA.

• All zoning violation complaints must be filed in writing and must be signed by the complainant before any violation will be investigated.
