HEBRON – Brittany Misner of Hebron will fill Bill Gulick’s unexpired term on the Lakewood Board of Education. Misner was selected from seven candidates by a 4-0 vote Wednesday night.
Board members spent about two and a half hours interviewing the candidates individually in executive or closed session. Missner is a 2007 Lakewood graduate who serves as the membership director for the Licking County Chamber of Commerce. Most recently she chaired last fall’s successful campaign to renew a 4.9 mill emergency levy for five years on the first try. The levy accounts for about 10 percent of the district’s revenues.
In a Letter to the Editor last November, Misner criticized the lame duck board for approving a two-year contract extension for Superintendent Mary Kay Andrews just hours after the two incumbents seeking reelection had been defeated. She wrote, “I support and believe in Mary Kay Andrews as our superintendent, however I do not support the most recent actions of the lame duck board of education to approve her contract. The renewal of the contract immediately following the passing of the emergency renewal levy was disappointing to me. The fact that it was added to the agenda following the results of the levy is shameful and disappointing.”
During public comments Wednesday night, Board President Steve Thorp was sharply criticized for a joking reference to a “squirrel gun” on social media and for characterizing a teacher as “a snowflake.” Thorp apologized for both comments Wednesday
