BALTIMORE – Liberty Union-Thurston School District residents got more good news when the bids for the new middle school were opened March 9.
Nine separate bid packages were opened including joint high school/middle school bids for technology and food service, construction of the new middle school, flooring for the high school renovation and environmental cleanup of a fuel tank.
Estimates for the five packages exclusively for the construction of the new 168,023 sq. ft. middle school totalled $8,112,309. The apparent low bids for these five packages totalled $7,539,900 or $572,409 or 7.1 percent below the estimates. The variances below the estimates ranged from 31.38 percent for plumbing with Crawford Mechanical as the apparent low bidder to .2 percent on HVAC with Crawford again as the apparent low bidder. The other apparent low bidders with variances below the estimate are:
• General Trades: Jeffrey Carr (7.36 percent below);
• Fire Protection: S&S Sprinker (22.47 percent below); and
• Electrical: X-F Construction Services (5.60 percent below).
The two shared bids – technology and food service – came in 15.39 percent and 42.6 percent respectively below estimates. Converse Electric is the apparent low bidder for technology and Breckenridge has that distinction for food service. The only bid exceeding the estimate is for flooring materials at the high school – a $101,550 bid by the high school’s general trades contractor on a $98,160 estimate.
All apparent low bidders have been interviewed, and the contractors are in the process of turning in required references and Ohio School Facility Commission paperwork, Superintendent Paul Mathews told The Beacon
this week. The project architects and construction manager must recommend each contractor for approval. Mathews hopes those recommendations will be ready for the board’s next meeting set for April 12.
At the board’s March 8 meeting, a senior expressed concern about possible limitations on seating for graduation if the ceremony is held in the middle school auditorium. She asked if any nonschool sites had been considered. Mathews said off-site alternatives haven’t been explored. If weather forces use of the auditorium rather than the football stadium, each student would be limited to five tickets. Some additional guests might be accommodated by using the middle school cafeteria for overflow.
Mathews said contractors have been offered the high school gym by March 28 or 29. Phase III of the high school renovation must start the Monday after Memorial Day. Mathews told the board that there were some concerns that contractors might be falling behind on Phase 1. One contractor worked long hours on a Saturday which helped.
“The gears have to mesh together,” Mathews explained. “Phase 2 can get lost in the shuffle if we’re not careful.” The gym and locker rooms are in Phase 2.
The 2010-2011 school calendar has been adjusted to give contractors more time this summer for student-free renovation work. The first day of school has been pushed back to Wednesday, Sept. 8. Students will still be out Oct. 11 – 15 for the county fair. Thanksgiving break is just Nov. 25 and 26. Winter break starts Dec. 24 with students returning on Jan. 3. Spring break is just two days, April 22 and 25. The last day of school will be Friday, June 10 with graduation set for Sunday, June 12.
Carey Ireland and Courtney Pettit were honored as the students of-the-month. Both are seniors. Ireland is the daughter of Brian and Tracey Ireland. She has been on Student Council for all four years and now serves as president. She is active in the Foreign Language Club, Teen Institute, FFA and FCA. She runs track and cross country, and is a cheerleader.
Pettit is the daughter of Julie and Kacy Pettit. She is active in choir and symphonic choir.
Andy Haines, industrial technology and physical education teacher, was selected by his peers as teacher-of-the-month.
Board members spent about 25 minutes in an executive ses- sion to discuss the employment of a public employee. When they returned, board members tabled an agenda item to employ George Shreyer as high athletic director and R. Scott Williamson as junior high athletic director. The high school position would be two-thirds full-time and the junior high position one-third full-time.
A supplemental contract for Ed Mattox as head junior high football coach was approved. Board members also approved two resignations for retirement purposes – elementary school reading specialist Paul Connor at the end of the school year and district treasurer David Butler, Jr. as of June 30. Butler has requested to be re-hired effective July 1. A public hearing will address his request in May.
The board’s next regular meeting is set for 7 p.m. on April 12, in the high school library.
