A funeral service for Mary Rose Leonard, 90, of Newark, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 17, 2015, at Brucker- Kishler Funeral Home, 985 N. 21st Street, Newark, with Dave Mason officiating. Burial will follow in Newark Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Her family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. on Friday, January 16, at the funeral home.
“Rose” was born September 24, 1924, in Columbus, to the late Robert and Jessie (Williams) Newport. She died at her daughter’s residence in Buckeye Lake and went to be with her Heavenly Father on January 14, 2015.
She was a 1942 graduate of Columbus South High School and attended Clarfield Elementary. Rose and her husband, Cy owned and operated the Utica Peat Company from 1952 to 1966. She was a talented seamstress, master of remodeling projects, and selfemployed property manager.
She is survived by her son, Larry (Patty) Leonard of Newark; daughters, Laura (Gary) Buck of Pickerington, Peggy Wells of Buckeye Lake, and Barbara (Richard Taps) Rogers of Gahanna; grandchildren, Brian Douglas Leonard, Andrew (Nikki) Snyder, Kim (Brian) Beck, Megan (Jascha Vissman) Rogers, Loren Buck and Michael Rogers; eight great-grandchildren; sister, June (Lawrence) Leonard of Columbus; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence “Cy” Leonard; her brothers, Robert Newport and William “Pete” Newport; and son-in-law, Robert L. Wells. Special thanks to her caregivers, Rose Sparks and greatgranddaughter, Abbigayle Snyder.
