Mary Mertz to head ODNR in new administration

COLUMBUS – Governor-elect Mike Dewine announced his first set of cabinet appointments Tuesday.

The handful of appointments included Mary Mertz as Director of the Department of Natural Resources. She will replace James Zehringer who announced his retirement after the election.

Currently, Mertz is the First Assistant Attorney General under Attorney General Mike DeWine. She oversees both the legal and administrative operations of the office. Mertz has extensive legal experience in both the private and public sectors. Prior to her current appointment, Mertz practiced law at a large, multi-national law firm.

She has also served as Chief of Staff to then-Lt. Governor Mike DeWine, as the Legislative Director for Congressman Bob McEwen, in the Office of Legislative Affairs in The White House, and at the Department of Natural Resources during the administration of Governor George V. Voinovich. Mertz is an avid sailor and outdoorsperson.

Her appointment is subject to Ohio Senate approval.
