Marvin Leroy Carpenter, 82, of Somerset, passed away July 16, 2013, at Pickering House in Lancaster. Marvin was born April 7, 1931, in Lancaster, the son of the late Leroy Gabriel and Carrie Spitler Carpenter.
Marvin was a 1949 graduate of Millersport High School.
On September 14, 1956, he married Kathleen McKenna. After two years in the Navy, they moved their young family to a farm north of Somerset in Perry County. Marvin retired from the Newark Air Force Station, and had also worked at the Newark Post Office.
In addition to his wife Kathleen, the joys of his life were his family; sons, Steve, Ben, Joe and daughter, Cynthia; his faith and his love of farming. Marvin is survived by his wife of 56 years, Kathleen; his children, Steve (Pearl) Carpenter of Somerset, Cynthia (Tim) McNichols of Columbus, Ben (Katrina) Carpenter of Somerset, and Joe (Kelley) Carpenter of Hartford City, Indiana; his beloved grandchildren, Denise and Luke Carpenter, Megan (Kevin Walsh) McNichols, Sean and Kelly McNichols, Ben (Tammi) Carpenter, Mike (Heidi) Carpenter, Katie and Drew Carpenter, Izaak Baltic, Taylor,Kari and Sara Carpenter; his great-grandchildren, Ben and Charlie, Ayven, Mikaela and Bailey; brother, Wayne (Martha) Carpenter of Reynoldsburg; sister, Arlene (Roy) Speakman of Lancaster; and many special nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 3-7 p.m. Thursday, July 18, 2013 at the Bope-Thomas Funeral Home in Somerset where services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 19, 2013 with Brother Richard H. Young officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery with military honors provided by Somerset American Legion Leo Ryan Post 58.
