Lelia L. Atkinson, age 99 of Baltimore, died on April 30, 2015, at the Pickering House. She was born in Vinton County on March 22, 1916, to the late Russell and Ethel Madison Henderson; She was a member of Fairfield Christian Church North Campus, which her family proudly donated land for the campus. She helped work on the family farm, whether it was bailing hay or driving tractors. She kept a huge garden and was an amazing shot with her 22. Lelia was an amazing person who was strong and flexible both in body and mind. She will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her daughters, Verlene Hoffman, Sharon Seymour, and Phyllis (Steve) Ricketts; son, Melvin (Barbra) Atkinson; 10 grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and several step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 68 years, Clarence Atkinson; daughter, Freda Atkinson; sister, Valerie Henderson; and son-in-law, Donald Seymour.
Funeral service was May 5, 2015, at the Johnson-Smith Funeral Home, Baltimore, officiated by Lelia’s unofficial adopted son, Pastor William Lavely. Burial followed at Floral Hills Memory Garden.
