PICKERINGTON – The defending Division II state softball champion Lakewood Lady Lancers meets Bloom-Carroll for the district championship at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 20, at Pickerington Central High School.
The Lady Lancers are ranked #1 in the state in the final high school coaches association state poll. Tuesday, the 25-1 Lady Lancers mercied Bishop Hartley 11-0 in five innings as ace Courtney Vierstra pitched a one-hit shutout, striking out 13.
Lakewood batters were equally overpowering with Tigan Braskie hitting a three-run home run, Megan Hitchcock with two doubles and three RBIs, Brenna Browfield going 4 for 4, Vierstra 3 for 4 and Courtney Knepper with two hits and two RBIs.
The baseball Lancers play St. Francis De Sales at 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 18, at Beavers Field in Lancaster for the district finals.
Lakewood won a heart-stopping 3-2 victory over Bloom Carroll Tuesday in Lancaster. The 22-6 Lancers had a scare with one on in the seventh inning. A slow ground ball took an unexpected bounce with the pitcher Quinn Chapman’s throw popping out of the first baseman’s glove. Chapman recovered the ball and got the runner trying to score from second base. After a hit, Chapman secured the win with a strikeout.
Lakewood is the only lake area school still competing in the baseball or softball state tournaments. The Sheridan Lady Generals lost 6-2 Monday to Warren Vincent in the district semi-finals.
