COLUMBUS – Many high school students find it difficult to wake up early enough during the week to watch the morning news – let alone be on it.
Last Friday was a very long day for the Lakewood drum corps. They had to be at school by 4:30 a.m. to board a bus for Columbus to appear on WBNS- 10TV’s morning news program as part of its high school football kickoff. They met news anchors Jeff Hogan and Jessa Goddard. Their long day ended around midnight, returning from an away football game at Amanda Clearcreek.
“That’s a big deal for these kids,” said Lori Green, volunteer coordinator of public relations and marketing for the Lakewood Lancer marching band. She said the Watkins Memorial High School drum line had been on the program and recommended to 10TV staff that they invite Lakewood onto the program.
Green said one day the Watkins Memorial drum line entered into a “very friendly rivalry” with Lakewood, the Watkins players were impressed with Lakewood’s musical ability and the rest, as they say, is history.
The Lakewood drum line includes: Cymbal- Mitchell Lane; Cymbal- Rachelle Miller; Cymbal Abigail Slater; Cymbal- MacKenzie Keller; Bass Drum- Zachary Green; Bass Drum- Benjamyn Hardy; Bass Drum- Paige Keener; Bass Drum- Kelsi Kessler;
Timbale- Dalton Longshore; Timbale- Cody Farmer; Timbale- Benjamin Wiest; Tenor- Kyle Bailey; Tenor- Stephen Stone; Tenor- Noah Corbett; Snare- Nathaniel Graham; Snare- Samuel Bauer; Snare- Josh Green; Snare- Molly Dugan; and Drum Major- Ellis Cramer.
