Lakewood Wall of Fame inductees announced




HEBRON – Lakewood Local School District recently announced the Class of 2010 inductees for the Lakewood Wall of Fame.

The Wall of Fame was created to honor those individuals or groups whose actions or achievements in their chosen fields bring honor and distinction to the heritage of the “ Lakewood” community. For the purposes of the Wall of Fame, “Lakewood” consists of all the villages, townships, schools, and entities that were combined to create the “roots” of the Lakewood Local School District.

Inductees are:

Jack Maybury – Recognized
for Service:

• Graduated from Johnstown High School and Mt. Union University in 1972 with a Masters from Xavier University in 1979;

• 36 years as a classroom teacher and 25 years as a coach;

• Coached 57 teams in football, basketball and track;

• Coached first coed junior high track team;

• In 1976, started a Summer Recreation Program;

• Registered many Lakewood residents to be voters;

• Developed numerous relationships and had great influence on many students;

• Created a respect and friendship with students, athletes and the Lakewood Community;

• Started and advised the Lakewood Junior High Student Council;

• Prepared students each year for the American Legion Americanism Test;

• Developed a study guide for 9th grade proficiency test and helped numerous students pass;

• Winner of the “You Made a Difference Award”;

• Member of the Ohio High School Coaches Association “Century Club”;

• Active member of the Lakewood Athletic Boosters;

• Current member of the Lakewood Digital Academy Board;

• Nominated by Joan, Jarrod and Jace Maybury.

William G. Ours – Recognized for Lifetime Recognition

• Born in Akron and moved to Hebron in 1946;

• Graduated from Hebron High School in 1957;

• Standout basketball player;

• Married Diana Clark in December 1958;

• Purchased the family business from Pappy Ours on Jan.1, 1959;

• Owned and operated Hebron business for 50 years;

• Lakewood Youth Baseball team sponsor;

• Hebron fire chief in 1960’s;

• Two sons, Kevin and Greg both Lakewood graduates;

• Instrumental in bringing towing and recovery education to Central Ohio;

• Inducted into the Towing and Recovery Hall of Fame in Chattanooga, TN in 1998

• Past board member of the Towing and Recovery Association Of America;

• Past president of the Towing and Recovery Association Of Ohio;

• President of the Hebron Business Association;

• Donated time and equipment to put up Christmas lights in Hebron;

• Honors include: One of the 500 oldest towing companies in the US in 1990, Licking County Commissioners Citizen of the Year in 1994, WreckMaster of the Year in 1996, and Towing and Recovery Association of America National Citizenship Award in 2002;.

• Member of Hebron Masonic Lodge #116, Licking County Scottish Rite and Aladdin Shrine, Buckeye Lake Yacht Club, board member of Harbor Hills Civic Asso. and member of the Hebron United Methodist Church;

• Donated countless hours of time, equipment and expertise to the Lakewood District;

• Nominated by Diana Ours.

Randy Thorp – Recognized
for Achievement

• Graduated from Lakewood High School in 1975;

• Graduated from COTC with an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice;

• Graduated from Mountain State University with a Bachelors Degree in Police Administration;

• Volunteer firefighter, paramedic and Asst. Chief for Buckeye Lake Fire Department;

• Volunteered at Licking County Sheriff’s Office as a reserve deputy and became a deputy sheriff in 1983;

• Served as a Patrol Deputy, Detective, Patrol Sergeant, Detective Sergeant, a Lieutenant in the Detective Division and Chief Deputy;

• Served as the commander and administrator of the highly successful Central Ohio Drug Task Force, a multi-county drug investigation unit;

• Sheriff’s Medal of Honor winner awarded by the Buckeye State Sheriff’s Association;

• Fraternal Order of Police Medal of Valor winner;

• Sheriff’s commendation recipient;

• Recognized by the Ohio House of Representatives and Senate as the 1984 Police Officer of the Year;

• Elected Licking County Sheriff in 2004 and re-elected in 2008;

• Attended numerous law enforcement seminars on violent crime, drug enforcement, psychological profiling, child abuse, arson, and effective Law Enforcement Management;

• Served as a panel member on the Ohio State Employees Relations Board;

• Professional member of National Sheriff’s Association, Buckeye State Sheriff’s Association, American Jail Association, Mid Atlantic Great Lakes Organized Crime Law Enforcement Network, Narcotics Association of Regional Coordinating Officers, International Narcotics Enforcement Association, and the National Internal Affairs Investigators Association.;

• Serves as a chairman for the Central Ohio Technical College Law Enforcement Advisory Panel and has served on the Central Ohio Technical College Alumni Council;

• Serves as current trustee for the Public Health Partnership of Licking County;

• Successfully developed multiple programs to assist Licking County citizens to include Project Lifesaver, Citizen’s Academy, Sexual Predator Awareness, and the S.T.O.P.P.E.D. program;

• Serves as Region 4 coordinator for the Ohio Homeland Security Law Enforcement Response Plan which encompasses 15 counties in central Ohio;

• 007 President of Licking County Chiefs of Police and Law Enforcement Administrators Association;

• Member of the Buckeye State Sheriff’s Association Board of Directors;

• Serves on the legislative committee of both National Sheriff’s Association, Buckeye State Sheriff’s Association;

• Possesses a great sense of LAKEWOOD PRIDE!;

• Nominated by Jeff Mason, Jim and Polly Mitchen and Brittaney Crider.

This year’s class will be inducted in a pre-game ceremony on Friday, Sept 17, prior to the Newark Catholic football game.
