PICKERINGTON – Defending Division II state champion Lakewood Lady Lancers are one win away from returning to Akron for the state tournament for the third year in a row.
The 29-1 Lancers combined excellent pitching from senior ace Courtney Vierstra with five home runs for a 10-1 regional semi-final win over Vincent-Warren Local Wednesday evening. Warren finished 13-13.
Brenna Brownfield and Megan Davis each hit two home runs. Brownfield’s were both two-run homers. Davis hit two solo blasts. Courtney Knepper hit a two-run homer. Vierstra held the Warriors to four hits, striking out 10 batters.
The regional final at noon on Saturday at Pickerington Central is a rematch of the 2016 final. Lakewood will face 15-10 Zanesville Maysville.
Lakewood’s baseball Lancers lost 5-0 to DeSales in the district final May 18, at Beavers Field in Lancaster. The Lady Lancers are the only lake area baseball or softball team still in the hunt for a state title.
