John Thomas “J.T.” VanSickle





Services for John Thomas “J.T.” VanSickle, 84, of Somerset, were February 5, 2008, at Bope-Thomas Funeral Home, Somerset, with Ray Linn officiating. Burial was in Somerset Cemetery. Graveside military honors were provided by the Somerset American Legion Leo Ryan Post 58.

John died at 2:15 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1, 2008, at FairfieldMedical Center.

J.T. was born April 19, 1923, in Somerset, the son of the late Oliver Thomas and Leila A. Drumm VanSickle.

He was a 1941 graduate of Somerset High School and a World War II Army Air Force veteran, where he was a radio operator on a B-24 Liberator. He was a member of the Somerset Cemetery Board, Somerset Masonic Lodge, and the Somerset United Methodist Church. He retired in 1988 as plant manager of Sakas Inc. in Somerset and had farmed all of his life.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, JoAnne Orr VanSickle, whom he married May 4, 1951; three daughters, Leslie and Ronald Schifer, of Marion, Lori and Norman Baldwin, of Thornville, and Lynn and Samuel Mason, of Heath; two sons, Jeff and Mary-Jo VanSickle, of Somerset, and John R. VanSickle of Somerset; four grandchildren, Susan Schifer, of Columbus, Robert Schifer, of Dayton, and Sydney and Ben Mason, of Heath; and one brother, David and Sally VanSickle, of Harbor Hills.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Snider and Peg Dittoe; two brothers, James P. VanSickle, Richard VanSickle; and an infant brother, William R. VanSickle.
