It’s time to get back-to-school immunizations

NEWARK – The Licking County Health Department (LCHD) urges parents to protect their children against vaccine-preventable diseases through immunization. It’s time to have children immunized before heading back to school. Please note the updated meningococcal vaccination requirements for incoming 7th and 12th graders listed below.

Clinic appointments fill up quickly prior to the first day of school. Parents should contact LCHD’s Immunization Clinic or their healthcare provider to ensure all required immunizations have been provided to their child before to the first day of school. Children who go to school without the required vaccinations risk being excluded from school until all requirements are met. They also risk becoming ill.

What immunizations does my child need?

• Incoming kindergarten students are required to have:

2 doses of the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella vaccination (MMR)

2 doses of the Varicella vaccination (Chicken Pox)

3 doses of the Hepatitis B vaccination

3 to 4 doses of the Polio vaccination (IPV)

4 to 5 doses of the DTaP vaccination (whooping cough)

• Incoming 7th Grade students are required to have:

1 dose of the TDaP vaccination (booster for whooping cough)

Updated: 1 dose of meningococcal vaccination (MCV4)

Recommended: HPV vaccination (an anti-cancer vaccine for both girls and boys)

• Incoming 12th Grade students are required to have:

Updated: 2 doses of meningococcal vaccination (MCV4)

Don’t delay – Call LCHD at (740) 349-6535 to schedule an immunization appointment at one of our clinic locations in Newark, Pataskala, or Buckeye Lake. Medicaid and many private insurance plans are accepted. Vaccines are provided at no cost to uninsured children through the Vaccines for Children Program (with a $10 administration fee per vaccine, up to $40 per family).
