MILLERSPORT – Tuesday morning was cold and rainy in Millersport, but it was a White Christmas just the same.

Millersport Lions Club volunteers lined up to help transport hundreds of gift baskets, food items and toys to area residents as part of the Walnut Township Local School District’s annual White Christmas event. This year, students and volunteers distributed 198 fruit baskets to area senior citizens, and 2,631 canned food items, countless toys and other items to 35 local families.

Ironically, Millersport Middle/ High School principal Jeff Stought said it was a bit of a challenge convincing local senior citizens that the fruit baskets were not charity. “It’s just a thank you for all they’ve done for us,” he said. “We had to make sure the seniors understood that this is a token of appreciation for what they do for our community. They know that there are people who could use (the fruit basket) more than they can.”

Millersport High School Government teacher Jennifer Swinehart said the German Club helped organize the supplies for the families. The elementary and middle/high school buildings dueled to see who could collect the most canned goods. The elementary school generated 1,224 cans and the middle/high school collected 1,407 for the 2,631 total.
