HHW collection set for Aug. 25 at OSU/COTC

Art from trash? Several pieces of abstract art were on display at the August 11 Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day at Thornville Elementary School. Several representatives of Pheonix were on hand to recover old, but still usable, paint. Pheonix is a national organization with a presence in Mount Vernon. The group tries to findpractical uses for petroleum-based products that end up in the waste stream. The focus is on plastics, but at Thornville several members were recovering paint that could be used for artwork. Jim Hart, director of the Perry County Recycling and Litter Prevention Program, invited the group to participate after learning of their efforts. More paint is dropped at collection days than any other waste. By turning paint over to Pheonix, Hart said disposal costs could be substantially reduced. The predominate yellows in the work on the left is from old traffic paint. Beacon photo by Charles Prince.
