MILLERSPORT – Walnut Township Local Schools board members unanimously accepted District Treasurer Kirk Grandy’s resignation at a very brief special meeting on Feb. 11.
Grandy’s resignation is effective August 1. He’s been the district’s treasurer/ chief financial officer since January 16, 2007. Grandy came to Walnut Township Schools from Southern Local School District in Perry County.
For four years of his tenure at Southern Local, he was also treasurer of Perry- Hocking Educational Service Center. Grandy believes he was the first school treasurer in Ohio serving two districts. He reprised that role when he became treasurer of Berne Union Schools on Jan. 1, 2011. Grandy will become Berne Union’s fulltime treasurer on August 1.
He also served as the volunteer head boys basketball coach for five years at Millersport High School.
“This is the best place I’ve worked up to the last 18 months,” Grandy told The Beacon this week. “It’s been different since then.” He expected to finish out his career at Walnut Township.
“I’m not running from the fiscal problem,” he emphasized. “We knew this day was coming.” Grandy had been projecting significant deficits at the end of this school year for several years. His twice-yearly five-year financial forecasts have been praised for their accuracy.
“I don’t have a problem with this board,” he added, acknowledging that the board has become more active in the district’s day to day decisions. “I want to thank the board for allowing me to be here for eight plus years.” Grandy also thanked his staff – Brenda Amspaugh, Mandy Schneider and Heather Terry.
