Gertrude (Gertie) E. Camechis

Gertrude (Gertie) E. Camechis, 88, died December 1, 2015, in Punta Gorda, Florida.

A devoted wife of her late husband of 63 years, Jimmie Camechis and mother of seven children, she is survived by one sister, Mildred R. Harder of Sun City, Florida, two brothers, Harold (Nellie) Schweikert of Lancaster and Larry (Carolyn) Schrader of Lancaster; children, Mike (Helen) of Chauncey, Nikki of Logan, Jimmie (Sheri) of Florida, Tony (Susie) of Glouster, Jeff (Julie) of Stoutsville, John of Thornville and Ron (Laura) of Florida; 20 grandchildren; and 23 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother, father and a brother.

She was born January 31, 1927, in Lancaster, to George Edward and Nellie Ruth Schweikert. Gertie graduated from Lancaster High School, met her husband, Jim and married in 1947. She worked as a phone operator, a cook for Fairfield Union Schools, an assistant at Heartland-Fairfield Nursing Home, but most importantly as a housewife raising seven children on their farm north of Rushville.

Gertie and Jimmie raised their family attending Somerset Otterbein EUB, and were members at Oakthorpe Christian Union Church. Considering the many hours devoted to caring for her family, she still dedicated more to helping others by visiting, volunteering and assistance. For years she taught Sunday and Vacation Bible School classes spreading the word of the Lord to children. She loved people, never knew a stranger, and touched the lives of many with her love by visiting nursing homes as well as people confined to their homes. She is and will be sorely missed by many.

Gertie requested cremation and a service will be held in the Spring at the Reid Cemetery.

The Thornville home of Hoskinson Funeral and Cremation Service was honored to care for Gertie and her family.
