Fire chief thanks farmers for help with grain rescue tube training

Editor:

I have been remiss in not writing this letter earlier. Time has a way of passing quickly, regardless of whether we are ready or not!

Over the summer of 2016, the Millersport Fire Department was awarded a Grant from Nationwide Insurance, for a “Grain Rescue Tube” system, to add to our arsenal of Rescue equipment. The training for this equipment was provided, but there was several things that were needed to accommodate the training. We needed to come up with over 100 bushels of dry grain and a section of grain bin sheet metal, so that the trainers were able to show all of the procedures that may be needed to accomplish a “bin rescue”.

I would like to thank Bobby Slater for providing the dry corn to be used in the training prop. Not only did he provide the corn, but he loaded it up and transported it to the Training Site behind Station 630, which was a huge benefit to the whole training process.

I also would like to thank Kevin Keller for providing the grain bin sheet metal that we used, to simulate cutting into the side of a grain bin to effect a rescue.

Without people like this in our community who will step up and donate their time and goods, the Millersport Fire Department would not be the organization that it is.
