Elma Hattie Barcus, 92, of Buckeye Lake, passed away on Saturday, October 27, 2012, at Autumn Healthcare Center, Newark. She was born on September 3, 1920, to the late Ernest Louis and Hazel Marie (Mann) Thompson in Berne, OH. Elma worked at Timken Roller Bearings and retired as a licensed practical nurse in 1984. Elma loved cooking, family, and her pet cats.
She is survived by one son, Edmund (Rita) Byers; one stepdaughter, Kris (Jim) Herder; seven grandchildren;one step-grandchild; seven great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; a brother in law, Si Seligman; a sister in law, Geneva Thompson; and several nieces and nephews.
A Methodist by faith, Elma was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Howard Thompson; three sisters, Dorothy (Kyle) McElfresh, Evelyn (Clark) Mays and Delores Seligman; husband, Fred Barcus; and two sons, James and Billy Joe Byers.
Friends may call from 12-2 p.m. on Thursday, November 1, 2012, at Hoskinson Funeral and Cremation Service, 285 East Main Street, Kirkersville. A private family funeral service, celebrating Elma’s life will be held at the funeral home on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Brian Harkness and Sisters of Children of Mary officiating. Burial will follow in Kirkersville Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in Elma’s name to Hospice of Central Ohio, 2269 Cherry Valley Road NE, Newark, OH 43055.
