Dorothy M. Hertlein, 84, of Buckeye Lake, passed away June 26, 2018. She was born on September 19, 1933, to the late Julia and Bill Garretson in Columbus. She graduated from Rosary High School in 1951 and attended Ohio University. She was preceded in death by her brother, Donald Garretson and is survived by her sister, Beatrice “Bunny” Hetterscheidt. She married a fellow Rosary High School graduate, Arthur Hertlein, in 1998, at her home parish Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Buckeye Lake. Art was by her side. She is survived by eight children; 18 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and many loving friends.
Dorothy started her long career in the insurance industry in 1976. She worked for Mutual of Omaha and owned her own D. Clary Independent Insurance Agency in Mt. Vernon, Ohio. While in Mt. Vernon, she started the Knox County Women In Business and was director of the Ohio Arts & Crafts Guild. She retired from the Sydney J. McSweeney State Farm Agency, Newark, in the late 1990’s.
She was passionate about her involvement with the Buckeye Lake Library and considered it her “job.” She loved taking the boat out on the Lake, reading, eating out at her favorite Buckeye Lake restaurants and hosting “porch parties” for her Cranberry Bog neighbors. She enjoyed traveling to Florida, Maryland and Colorado to visit friends and family.
The family appreciates the incredible care Dorothy received at the The James Cancer Hospital. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 7, at Our Lady of Mt. Caramel, Buckeye Lake, with a reception at 1 p.m. at the Buckeye Lake Library. Contributions in memory of Dorothy may be made to the Friends of the Buckeye Lake Library, PO Box 708, Buckeye Lake, Ohio 43008 or online at www.friendsofbuckeyelakelibray.org
